2.2 CENTRIFUGAL SOLIDS HANDLING PUMPS

The contractor shall furnish and install two (2) vertical, close-coupled, motor-driven, non-clog type pumps.

The pump shall be an 8” vertical, non-clog type of heavy cast iron construction, especially designed for the use of mechanical seals. In order to minimize seal wear caused by linear movement of the shaft, the shaft bearing nearest the pump impeller shall lock in place so that endplay is limited to the clearance within the bearing. Size the impeller to minimize seal wear as a result from shaft deflection caused by the radial thrust of the pump. Size shall be determined from the top of the impeller to the lower bearing supporting the impeller shall have a minimum diameter

Lift Station N6A Section 22 13 29 Page 4 of 1-7/8” for motor frame sizes 213 through 286; 2-1/8” for motor frame sizes 324 and 326; and 3” for frame 364 and larger. The dimension from the lowest bearing to the top of the impeller shall not exceed 6”.

Centrifugal solids handling pumps shall be of the non-clogging centrifugal type designed to pump solids up to 3 inches in diameter and which provide no internal interstices that catch solids and stringy materials to cause clogging.

2.2.1 Pump Characteristics

Provide two pumps; each shall be capable of delivering 410 GPM of raw water or wastewater against a total dynamic head of 37 feet. The minimum acceptable pump efficiency at this condition shall be 68%. Due to the energy-conservation requirements, manufacture shall meet the above minimum efficiency. The maximum allowable speed shall be 1170 RPM. The minimum rated horsepower of each pump motor shall be 10.

Pump Service Sewage

Design Operating Point 410 gpm flow, 37 feet head, 68 percent efficiency.

Impeller Type Cast-iron non-clog centrifugal

Operating Speed 1170 rpm

Electrical Characteristics 208 volts ac, 3 phase, 60 Hz

Size Within rated load driving pump at specified rpm

2.2.2 Pump Casing

Pump casing construction shall have tapped and plugged holes for venting and draining the pump. The casing shall be capable of withstanding pressures 50 percent greater than the maximum operating pressure. The volute shall have smooth passages. The casing shall be such that removal of the impeller can be without disturbing the suction and discharge connections. The casing shall have a hand-hole to permit inspection and cleaning of the pump interior. Pump shall have lifting eyes to facilitate handling of the pump.

2.2.3 Impeller

The impeller design shall be with smooth passages to prevent clogging and pass stringy or fibrous materials. The manufacture shall balance the impeller statically, dynamically, and hydraulically within the operating range and to the first critical speed at 150 percent of the maximum operating speed.

Lift Station N6A Section 22 13 29 Page 5

The manufacturer shall securely key the impeller to the shaft with a locking arrangement whereby the impeller cannot be loosen by torque from either forward or reverse direction.

The pump impeller shall be of the enclosed two-port type made of close-grained cast-iron. The eye of the impeller as well as the ports shall be large enough to permit the passage of a sphere 3” in diameter in accordance with nationally recognized codes.

The impeller shall have a machined keyway, with a stainless steel key, and secured to the motor shaft by a stainless steel cap screw equipped with a Nylock or other suitable self-locking device. The impeller shall not be screwed or pinned to the motor pump shaft and shall be readily removable without the use of special tools.

To prevent the buildup of stringy materials, grit and other foreign particles around the pump shaft, all impellers less than full diameter shall be trimmed inside the impeller shrouds. The shrouds shall remain full diameter to maintain that close minimum clearance from shrouds to volute. Both the end of the shaft and the bore of the impeller shall taper to permit easy removal of the impeller from the shaft.

2.2.4 Wearing Rings

Renewable wearing rings shall be provided on the impeller and casing and shall have wearing surfaces normal to the axis of rotation. Manufacture shall construct wearing rings of steel. Wearing rings design shall be for ease of maintenance and secured to prevent rotation. Contractor may use replaceable steel wear plates fastened to casing in lieu of wearing rings on casing and impeller.

2.2.5 Pump Shaft

The shaft shall be solid stainless steel through the mechanical seal to eliminate corrosion and abrasive rust particles. Removable shaft sleeves will not be acceptable if the shaft under the sleeve does not meet the specified minimum diameter. Pump shaft shall be of adequate size and strength to transmit the full driver horsepower with a liberal safety factor.

2.2.6 Pump Shaft Sleeve

The pump shaft shall protect from wear by a stainless steel, high-grade alloy steel or bronze shaft sleeve. The joint between the shaft and sleeve shall seal to prevent leakage.

2.2.7 Stuffing Box

The stuffing box shall be of the same material as the casing and shall be grease sealed. The stuffing box design shall be for a minimum of five rings of packing and shall have easily removable split type glands.

2.2.8 Mechanical Seals

Lift Station N6A Section 22 13 29 Page 6

Pump shall include double mechanical seals to seal the pump shaft against leakage. Each seal interface shall hold in contact by its own spring system, supplemented by external liquid pressures. The seal system construction shall be readily removable from the shaft.

2.2.9 Bearings

Pump bearings shall be ball or roller type designed to handle all thrust loads in either direction. Pumps depending only on hydraulic balance end thrust will not be acceptable. Bearings shall have an ABEMA L-10 life of 50,000 hours minimum, as specified in ABMA 9 or ABMA 11.

The bearing nearest the impeller shall be designed for the combined thrust and radial load. The upper bearing shall be free to move linearly with the thermal expansion of the shaft and carry only radial loads.

2.2.10 Lubrication

Bearings shall be grease lubricated. Provide a grease fitting on the pump for grease-lubricated bearings. The grease fitting shall be of the type that prevents over-lubrication and the building up of pressure injurious to the bearings. If the grease fitting is not easily accessible, provide grease tubing to a convenient location.

2.2.11 Pump Support

Vertical shaft centrifugal pumps shall have separate bases for the pump and motor. A heavy cast iron base with adequate legs that provide maximum rigidity and balance shall support the vertical dry pit centrifugal pump.

2.2.12 Coupling

Couplings shall be of the heavy-duty flexible type, keyed or locked to the shaft. Disconnecting of the coupling shall be possible without removing the driver half or the pump half of the coupling from the shaft. Couplings for extended shaft vertical centrifugal pumps may be of the universal type.

2.11 ELECTRICAL WORK

Provide electrical motor driven equipment specified complete with motors, motor starters, controls and wiring in accordance with latest code requirements. Electrical characteristics shall be as specified or indicated. Motor starters shall be complete with thermal overload protection and other appurtenances necessary for the motor control specified. Provide manual or automatic control and protective or signal devices required for the operation specified, and any control wiring required for controls and devices but not shown.

PART 3 EXECUTION
