VA Tampa – Replace Air Handling Unit ED-203 Architectural Narrative

AESUS Design Group A - 1

Architectural Narrative

Introduction

This project scope shall include but not be limited to replacing the Air Handler Unit ED-203 on the roof of Building One at the James A. Haley VA Hospital, located at 13000 Bruce B. Downs Boulevard, Tampa, Florida. This work will also include minor architectural, structural, mechanical, plumbing, and electrical.

In addition, this project shall include an Industrial Hygienist & a hazardous material remediation study.

The presence of hazardous material has been confirmed in the past in the hospital and is part of the scope to verify if hazardous material is present. OHC Environmental Engineering will visited the site and develop a work plans and specifications for this project as required for any hazardous material that is detected.

Demolition The project demolition will include removing the existing AHU, mechanical curbs, associated roofing, and the supply and return ducts will need to be upsized for the increased volume. See mechanical narrative for additional information.

Architectural The architectural scope for this project is limited to removing select ceilings, light fixtures, and mechanical grills to gain access to the bottom of the AHU and duct work located in the ceiling space of the emergency department. The architectural scope also includes coordinating and detailing the roof curbs and associated roof repairs.

The current AHU design intent is to remove the exist AHU and replace with new. The exist duct penetrations below the unit will be reused. The new AHU will be slightly raised up to allow the supply and return ducts to pass below the AHU and connect to the existing roof penetrations. We will provide a walking platform and stair for maintenance as part of the design. The walking platform will be integral with the AHU support. See attached drawings and structural for additional info.

Example walking platform and raised AHU:

AESUS Design Group A - 2

Structural The structural scope of work includes analyzing the existing structural capacity. Due to the new AHU requirements, the AHU will likely grow in size and weight. The new AHU will have a larger footprint and steel platform to distribute the additional loads.

Mechanical The mechanical scope is limited to removing and replacing the existing Air Handler Unit ED-203 and supply & return ducts over the emergency department. Therefore, the duct work and grills may be modified to support the new system and layout. See the mechanical narrative for additional information.

Plumbing General plumbing will not be required for this project.

Electrical The electrical scope is limited to disconnecting and reconnecting the existing AHU. Minor modifications to the existing electrical and low voltage may be required to support the new system.

The design intent will be to re-use the existing electrical circuit and reinstall all low voltage systems as required for the new layout.

Design Criteria All aspects of the design shall be in full compliance with VA design criteria as listed in VA design guides and manuals which can be found on the web at the VA Office of Facilities Management technical information library – site address: http://www.cfm.va.gov/TIL/.

The following codes and design criteria shall be utilized to the extent applicable:

VA Directives, Design Manuals, Master Specifications, VA National CAD Standard Application Guide, and other Guidance on the Technical Information Library (TIL) http://www.cfm.va.gov/til/.

Project Phasing Although this project will not ultimately affect life safety and/or egress, this project will need an in-depth discussion and phasing plan to understand how to keep hospital operations going when AHU ED-203 is offline. This project will include phasing to minimally impact the patient care and existing facility shutdowns. The contractor shall be required to perform construction operations during time frames approved by the hospital. Ultimately, the precise sequence will be determined after a building contractor has been selected and consultations among the hospital staff, facilities personnel, contractor, and architect can be arranged.

The following items shall be considered for this project prior to the start of construction:

Staging for construction materials and access information for contractor.

In-depth site walks with COR

Supply air main – Velocities were evaluated in the existing supply air duct system and the SA was verified to be undersized and will be replaced along with ancillary ductwork found to be undersized. Below is a figure of showing the velocity of the mains

AESUS Design Group MP-4

Return air main - Velocities were evaluated in the existing return air duct system and the RA was verified to be properly sized. Below is a figure of showing the velocity of the main.

AESUS Design Group MP-5

Exhaust system o The dedicated exhaust system is existing to remain. The exhaust rates of each room are not being changed, therefore, there is no need to replace the exhaust fans.

o The new AHU has a dedicated return/exhaust fan that is capable of exhausting the air when the unit converts to 100% OA in the event of a pandemic.

Chilled water system – The chilled water system was analyzed and determined to be sized appropriately for the new 100% OA requirement.

Heating hot water system – The heating hot water system was analyzed and determined to be sized appropriately for the new 100% OA requirement. We reached out to the manufacturer and it was indicated that the existing heat exchangers have the capacity to perform at the new levels without any modifications. The existing heat exchanger are existing to remain.

Humidification – The humidification will be provided by campus steam.

Plumbing

Condensate drains will be routed from new AHU to existing roof drain.

VA Tampa – Replace Air Handling Unit ED-203 Structural Narrative

AESUS Design Group S - 1

Structural Narrative

Introduction

The scope of work will involve replacing the existing Air Handler Unit ED-203 that is located on the roof of Building One at the James A. Haley VA Hospital in Tampa, Florida. The structural scope includes an analysis of the existing roof structure to determine whether the existing roof structure can adequately support the larger AHU (increased size in both weight and dimensionally).

Structural Scope

In order to offset the increase of unit weight, the intent of the design is to remove the existing concrete housekeeping pad (6” of normal-weight concrete placed directly on the 1-1/2” x 20 gage steel roof deck ~90 psf) while leaving the roof penetrations as-is to accommodate the currently in-use ductwork. The mechanical unit will be placed on a pre-manufactured roof curb and fastened to the roof structure per the manufacturer installation instructions.

The structural analysis of the existing roof members supporting the new mechanical unit utilized existing structural drawings prepared by Allan and Conrad, Inc. dated 1/28/2005. The existing drawings indicate the existing unit and housekeeping pad is supported on W16x40 wide flange roof members spanning to a W24x55 wide flange girder to the north and a W18x35 wide flange girder and masonry bearing wall to the south. The new mechanical unit weight is 18,024 lbs or 89 psf. By comparison, the new unit weight is less than the existing concrete pad weight which is being removed. However, an analysis of the steel beams and girders was also performed to validate the structural member adequacy.

With the existing concrete pad being cast directly on the existing 1-1/2” x 20 gage steel roof deck, it is presumed that…
