SR-1 Berm Knockdown
Berms are defined as soil that has been unnaturally distributed resulting in the potential for water to unnaturally flow or pool within the suppression line. Berms created within suppression lines shall be pulled back and spread out to restore lines to natural contour. Knocked down and spread berms shall allow water to spread freely and naturally. When slash or other material is present in berms this material will be spread out according to the language provided within the SR-3 specs.
SR- 2 Waterbars
Waterbars shall be installed on suppression lines as shown on Contract Area Map.
Construct waterbars by cutting a dip in the suppression line and mounding excavated material along the downgrade edge of the waterbar. Waterbars shall be cut to a sufficient angle so that they will drain to the outside of the repaired line into undisturbed ground and not direct water into stream channels.
1. Place waterbars at an angle relative to the fire line between 30 to 45 degrees
2. Cut water bars minimum six inches into the compact soil. Total height from bottom of the waterbar to the top of the waterbar should average at least 18 inches and not exceed 24 inches.
They shall cross the entire suppression line and be constructed to the following spacing unless otherwise designated by the Forest Service.
All material excavated shall be used in the installation of waterbars. Bermed material shall be compacted over the length and width of the berm by the equipment performing the work.
Percent Grade Maximum spacing
0-10% 175 feet
11-25% 125 feet
26-50% 80 feet
>50% 50 feet

SR- 3 Spreading Slash
Slash includes logs, limbs, brush, rootwads and other woody material. Slash shall be removed from berms and keyholes and scattered over the suppression line.
Retain 80% ground cover in areas proposed for removal or dozer line repair consisting of material 4” inches or less in diameter in contact with the ground. Not all of the slash should be left within the suppression line in order to avoid excess fuel loading (Greater than 7 tons/acre). Fuel loading exceeding 7 tons/acre shall be removed per specifications in SR-13
No more than 3 logs greater than 15” inches in diameter at the large end, will be retained per acre.
SR-4 Chipping
Mechanically process (Chip/Masticate) suppression generated slash. Chipped material shall not be piled and should be spread evenly across the suppression line or as agreed with COR no greater than four inches in depth.
If chipped material exceeds 4 inches of depth, transport excess material to designated removal locations. Removal locations are identified on Contract Area Maps. Additional removal locations may be identified and agreed to by COR during operations.
SR- 5 Skid and Deck or Skid and Pile
Mechanically skid cut biomass material to designated removal locations. Material shall be skidded with the leading end clear of the ground unless otherwise agreed to.
Decked biomass material shall have all boles parallel, and deck is compact. Includes tops and limbs of material unless otherwise agreed upon.
Piled biomass material shall be constructed dirt-free and compact to facilitate complete burning.
SR- 6 Skid, Deck and Process
Mechanically skid material to designated removal locations.
Material shall be skidded with the leading end clear of the ground unless otherwise agreed to. Decked material shall have tops and limbs removed and be bucked to specifications for minimum piece size set forth in Appendix B, Division A, Volume and Utilization Standards unless otherwise agreed upon.
Unutilized material shall be piled for disposal by the Forest Service using piling specifications in Appendix B C6.7#.
Page 6 of 6 Eagle Lake Ranger District
SR- 7 Suppression Line Closure
Unless otherwise agreed in writing, suppression lines shall be closed to vehicular traffic per requirements listed below.
Closure Requirements Table
Repair Line(s) Closure Requirements
2-27 Utilize available material (Rootwads/Large Logs and Rocks) and/or construct closure berms as agreed to by project COR to prevent motorized use where line intersects NFSR 31N09.
SR-11 Unique Repairs
Sensitive repair locations will have site specific needs unique to the damage caused by suppression efforts.
Repair Line(s) Protection Measures
5-8 Refer to Clause 32 and 33 for Meadow and Wetlands protections.
SR-12: Whole Tree Removal
Suppression lines that have excess fuel loading as a result of whole trees being piled throughout the suppression line need to be relocated to designated removal locations identified on Contract Area Maps or as agreed to with COR. This includes trees that may or may not have the rootwads still attached. Relocated fuels that are not utilized shall be piled for disposal by the Forest Service using piling specifications in Appendix B C6.7# or as agreed to.
Removal locations are identified on Contract Area Maps.
SR-13 Fuels Removal
Fuel loading exceeding 7 tons/acre associated with SR-3 shall be relocated to designated removal locations identified on Contract Area Maps or as agreed to with COR. Relocated fuels that are not utilized shall be piled for disposal by the Forest Service using piling specifications in Appendix B C6.7# or as agreed to.
