About this file

This document is a specification for 75% phosphoric acid issued by the Great Lakes Water Authority (GLWA) for use in drinking water treatment. The specification outlines detailed requirements for the chemical composition, delivery, and quality of phosphoric acid, including strict guidelines for impurity levels, physical properties, and regulatory approvals. The acid must meet United States Environmental Protection Agency (U.S.E.P.A.) and National Sanitation Foundation (N.S.F.) standards, with deliveries limited to 3,600 gallons per shipment and a required delivery timeframe of five days from request.

The specification mandates that all ingredients must be food-grade quality, with comprehensive chemical composition requirements including limits on substances like zinc, silicates, fluoride, arsenic, and heavy metals. Each delivery must be accompanied by specific documentation, including a tank wagon certificate of cleanliness, a scale ticket showing acid weight, and a certificate of analysis. A one-liter sample must be analyzed by the water treatment plant laboratory before each delivery, and the phosphoric acid must meet precise physical characteristics such as specific gravity, melting point, and viscosity. The specification emphasizes that the phosphate must not contain any soluble minerals or organic substances that could be harmful to human health.
