215-597-5949 Goals: The National Park Service strives to support urban projects in Richmond, Virginia. These projects provide urban dwellers and people who live in socio or economically disadvantaged urban communities with the support, knowledge and means to experience the outdoors and build relevancy for all Americans, connecting with their lives where they live. It can also show citizens how to utilize their communities’ diversities to expand a network of similar goals and experiences. Richmond, Virginia is one of 10 cities which were chosen to serve as model cities in initiating the Urban Fellow program in 2016. The NPS, Urban Fellow, local governments, and city communities have much to offer the urban dweller: a sense of place, an escape from cubicle confines, recognition that everyone's history is important, a restored and accessible waterfront, and a threshold experience to a greater outdoors. The NPS would like to continue its strategy to engage communities and offer assistance and active participation to help build communities across the urban landscape.
A. Project Goals – Support Enrichmond Foundation with the conservation and promotion of Evergreen Cemetery, which is the burial site and resting place of Maggie L Walker. Evergreen Cemetery is located in an urban area in Richmond, Virginia. The cemetery has been falling into ruin due to lack of preservation and natural plant overgrowth. The Enrichmond Foundation is responsible for trying to restore and preserve the burial site.
Project Objectives – The objective is to support the preservation and restoration of the burial sites which have long been neglected. This involves offering programs and tours to raise awareness to urban citizens of memorialization Maggie L Walker and other prominent African American historical figures buried alongside Ms. Walker. It is also involves providing educational outreach to youths and young people to help foster the relationship between their own lives and their shared history. Eighty percent of Americans reside in urban areas.
PP: Urban projects engage recipients, partners, communities, and visitors in shared stewardship of historically significant landmarks, trails and burial sites. In addition, the information, products and/or services identified or developed by projects will be shared through a variety of strategies to increase public awareness, knowledge, and support for historic preservation and the stewardship of the nation’s cultural and historical heritage as well as youth engagement. Projects will support the Government’s objective to provide opportunities for urban youth to learn about the environment by spending time working on projects linked to Maggie L. Walker National Historical Site and Richmond National Battlefield Park. The NPS receives the indirect benefit of projects which will motivate youth participants to become involved in the natural, cultural and historical resource protection and education of their communities and beyond.
Overview: In an effort to advance the promotion of Evergreen Cemetery in Richmond’s east end, Richmond National Battlefield Park and Maggie L. Walker National Historic Site will be working in conjunction with the Enrichmond Foundation to implement and expand on our existing partnership. Evergreen Cemetery is the final resting place of Maggie L. Walker and other great Richmond dignitaries. As such, working to support the Enrichmond Foundation serves as an ancillary benefit for the Park Service. The recipient has deeply rooted connections to Richmond’s civic and non-profit organizations, making it a natural fit with the goal of supporting the public purpose, achieving relevancy; and engaging public in preservation and stewardship in urban communities. This can be achieved by:
• Collaborating on matters relating to historical, cultural and natural resources (i.e. biography development, photography and videography documentation, data collection, etc.);
• Offering educational youth internships in conjunction with the Enrichmond Foundation, provided such programs directly connect with parks’ resources, goals and stories;
• Researching burial plots to identify the citizens and dignitaries buried there; and then documenting findings.
• Working together to produce a videography and photo record of burial plots
• Participating together in staff meetings and community neighborhood meetings to foster close cooperation on agreement implementation, both internally and externally;
• Strategizing public relations (media) messaging to share stories about co-sponsored initiatives;
• Raising awareness of urban green spaces and places where all Americans can connect with their shared history.
Recipient: Enrichmond
Sub Involv: 1. Monitor and provide Federal oversight of activities performed under this Agreement. At the Recipient’s request, NPS may also provide technical assistance to the Recipient in support of the objectives of this Agreement.
2. Substantial involvement by NPS is anticipated during the period of performance of this task agreement to include:
