About this file
This document is an Operation, Maintenance and Repair Manual for a Lufkin HSQ2724 Marine Gear with Disconnect Clutch, originally contracted by ALCO PRODUCTS, INC. for USCG 210 Foot Class WPC Vessels on December 22, 1964. The manual covers a reduction gear unit with a torque shaft drive and disconnect clutch, designed for marine propulsion applications.
Key specifications include a 3.32:1 reduction ratio, 1000 RPM input speed, 301 RPM output speed, and a 2550 HP unit rating. The gear unit features a self-contained lubrication system using MIL-L-9000 oil, with an 80-gallon gear case sump and oil temperature range of 150-185°F. The manual provides comprehensive instructions for installation, operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and disassembly, including detailed guidance on clutch engagement, lubrication procedures, and potential maintenance issues. The unit is equipped with auxiliary components like a Tuthill gear-driven oil pump, American Industrial Heat Transfer heat exchanger, and a Fawick marine clutch.

Text version
The heat exchanger is an American Industrial Heat Transfer, p/n AA-1042-4-6-TP-CN7-B-Z. This is a two pass unit having 3/8 diameter 90-10 cupro-nickel tubes, fixed tube bundle, bronze end bonnets, and zinc anodes for corrosion protection. Oil from the pump is circulated through the shell and cooling water is circulated through the tubes.
Approximately 60 GPM of cooling water at 85°F will be required to maintain the unit at the desired temperature. An automatic temperature regulator valve is provided to control the oil flow rate through the heat exchanger.
If the heat exchanger should develop a leak in either the shell or tube side, field repair should not be attempted as it cannot be dismantled for repair. A faulty exchanger should be replaced with a new one as quickly as possible. The complete lubricating system and gear unit should be purged and flushed out as quickly as practical if water contaminates the lubrication system.
The duplex oil filters are of all metal construction having permanent edge type cartridges. The “T” handle on the filters should be turned a few turns daily to remove any accumulation of foreign material from the filter discs and maintain proper cleaning action of the filter.
A sectional view illustrating the internal construction of the filter is shown in Figure 5.
The gear driven oil pump is a Tuthill Model 5RCS which has an automatic reversing feature. The pump is designed to maintain constant direction of flow from the same pump port, regardless of the direction of shaft rotation.
The Tuthill internal gear principle is based upon the use of a rotor, idler gear and crescent shaped partition. Only two moving parts comprise the pumping element. Figure 6 illustrates this principle.
