Location
The project area is located in Kane County at the Wahweap State Fish Hatchery in Big Water Utah. Big Water is located 20 miles northwest of Page Arizona and is also 60 miles east from Kanab Utah (see map below).
The roads and well site are constructed of dirt and gravel. DWR has constructed and used these roads for several years. There will be no off road driving needed for the contractor's equipment.
1. Introduction The existing well is 12" in diameter and is 747' deep. The well has been altered since it was originally drilled in 1971. During the fall of 2011, the entire well was refurbished and re-cased (the original 1971 well log is attached). The upper 347' is a solid .375" steel casing and the bottom 400' is a 12" 100 slot SS wire wrap screen. During the refurbishing, the new 747' of 12" casing was placed into the original 16" casing and gravel was packed between the two. The pump assembly is an oil lubed system.
1.1 Background
Over the past 1.5 years the pump bowls have started to exhibit "Up Thrust"; this has increased drastically over the past 2 months allowing the pump to vibrate with great intensity when in operation. Along with the "Up Thrust'', this well pump assembly has not been pulled and the casing cleaned since fall 2011. The purpose of this project is to pull the existing pump assembly, clean the 747' of column pipe, document casing before and after cleaning with video, inspect the drive assembly, replace the pump bowls to run within a specific performance range, replace the out-of-date pump panel, and service the 100 HP vertical drive motor.
1.2 Scope ofWork
The pump assembly will need to be pulled and the upper 347' solid .375" steel casing and the bottom 400' of 12" 100 slot SS wire wrap screen cleaned and brushed thoroughly. Before cleaning, the contractor will need to provide a video log of the entire 747' for review/inspection by State Engineers. After the cleaning process is completed, the contractor will again provide a video log of the entire 747' for review/inspection by State Engineers.
The pump bowls were designed incorrectly when replaced in 2011. Since 2011 the bowls have had "Up Thrust", which has worsened over the years. The project will include new bowls that will run within a specific curve and performance range. The pump will need to pump 1,100 gpm at ground level and also pump 700 gpm to the water tank that sits 130 feet above ground level. Along with replacing the bowls, the drive assembly will need a thorough inspection and the upper bearing replaced in the bonnet/discharge head.

The current pump panel is out-of-date and a challenge to find parts for. This project will include a new pump panel that will meet or exceed the requirements to run the current 100 HP pump motor. The pump panel must include a Variable Frequency Drive option and be setup to fill the current water tank automatically with high and low water level sensors. The new pump panel must also be able to operate a
24 January 201824 January 2018 pump valve during start-up and shut-down. The new pump panel must also have the option to be operated manually. A new sonar water level sensor for the pump will need to be purchased and installed. The water level sensor must also operate in conjunction with the new pump panel and work with an artesian well. Along with the above requirements, the new pump panel must be vented with an exhaust fan for cooling. The Wahweap State Fish Hatchery has been working with Mat Player (801-243- 7848) at Delco Western in Salt Lake City, Utah for many years and would strongly recommend working with them on the new pump panel purchase and installation.
The current 100 HP vertical drive motor will need to be serviced. The service will include, but not be limited to, re-dipping the windings, new upper and lower bearings, cleaning, and turbine oil change. The closest location to the job site is Stewart Brothers Electric in Cedar City, Utah.
The existing well has a concrete pump house over the well, with a sky light located directly above the well in the roof. The contractor will have the ability to pull the pump assembly through the sky light to make all repairs.
