Section 02221: Building Demolition
This is a technical specification section for building demolition work. The contractor must complete removal of all wood/masonry structures, stools, and materials above the concrete floor slab, including pumping out human waste from vault toilets (approximately 1,000 gallons per vault). The contractor is responsible for identifying and properly disposing of hazardous materials, specifically non-friable asbestos vent pipes from vault toilets and potential lead-based paint, in compliance with EPA regulations and local hauling and disposal requirements. A waste management plan must be submitted within 10 days of work commencement, documenting waste identification and disposal quantities using consistent units of measure (weight or volume), along with landfill and incinerator disposal records including manifests, weight tickets, receipts, and invoices.
The contractor must comply with ANSI/ASSE A10.6 and NFPA 241 standards and remove all demolition waste materials from the project site to EPA-approved landfills without burning any demolished materials. Following demolition, the contractor must backfill and compact the resulting cavity using excavated material from the new vault to a minimum density of 95 percent of maximum dry density per AASHTO T 99, Method C. Backfill placement shall occur in maximum loose layers of 150 mm (6 inches), with optimum moisture content maintained between -4 and +2 percent as determined by AASHTO T 217 or T 239. Acceptable compaction equipment excludes rubber-tired or smooth steel wheel rollers, and in-place materials must be free of lenses, pockets, streaks, or layers differing substantially in texture or gradation from surrounding materials.

SECTION 02221 BUILDING DEMOLITION
PART 1 - GENERAL
1.1 SECTION REQUIREMENTS
A. Action Submittals:
1. Waste Management Plan: Submit plan within 10 days of date established for commencement of the Work.
B. Waste Management Plan: Develop a waste management plan consisting of waste identification and waste disposal plans. Indicate quantities by weight or volume, but use same units of measure throughout waste management plan.
1. The vent pipes of the vault toilets are painted asbestos pipes and much be disposed of carefully.
2. May have lead-based paint based on the age of the building.
C. Landfill and Incinerator Disposal Records: Manifests, weight tickets, receipts, and invoices.
PART 2 - PRODUCTS
2.1 PEFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS
A. Regulatory Requirements: Comply with EPA regulations and with hauling and disposal regulations of authorities having jurisdiction.
B. Standards: Comply with ANSI/ASSE A10.6 and NFPA 241.
PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.1 DEMOLITION
A. This includes complete removal of the wood/masonry structures, stools, and anything else that is above the concrete floor slab.
B. The non-friable asbestos vent pipes shall be carefully removed and disposed of according to hazardous waste regulations.
C. Remove demolition waste materials from project site and legally dispose of them in an EPA-approved landfill. Do not burn demolished materials.
D. The human waste in the vault shall be pumped out by the contractor. The restroom vaults are approximately 1000 gal each vault.
3.2 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL
A. Backfill and compact soil to fill hole left by demolition of vault toilet
B. Backfill material: Use the excavated material from the new vault.
C. Backfill Placement: Spread backfill materials over the full width of the cross section of the cavity to a maximum loose thickness of 150 mm (6 inches), and compact as specified in paragraph 3.2E before the next layer is spread. The Contractor may use any type of compaction equipment except rubber tired or smooth steel wheel rollers to obtain the required degree of compaction.
The in place materials shall be free of lenses, pockets, streaks, or layers of materials differing substantially in texture or gradation from the surrounding materials.
D. Moisture Content: During placing and compacting of backfill, the optimum moisture content (4 percent to +2 percent) as determined by AASHTO T 217 or AASHTO T 239, unless otherwise approved, shall be maintained by wetting or drying, as required.
E. Compaction: Compact the backfill to a minimum density of 95 percent of the maximum dry density as determined by AASHTO T 99, Method C
