ARMY NATIONAL GUARD BRAND GUIDELINES
U.S. ARMY
BRAND
STRATEGY
WHAT DOES THE ARMY BRAND MEAN?
The U.S. Army Brand exists to strengthen the Army position as an organization that Americans support, join , work for and recommend.
The army brand is designed to assist the army in developing a unified approach to all communications and messaging. It is intended to align and unify strategy and communication across organizations within the army, to form one consistent and comprehensive army brand. It will help army stakeholders and the american public better understand and value the army institution, so they will be more willing to support, recommend, or consider joining either as a Soldier, or an army Civilian.
A few key factors prompted this important initiative:
1. Need to differentiate the army from other military branches and increase first choice preference.
2. Desire to reduce confusion and inefficiency in the market that was resultant of having many disparate and individual identity systems in use throughout the army organization.
Having a consistent Identity and Strategy creates a single, universal brand that clearly and succinctly identifies what the army stands for, while allowing tailored and strategically linked messaging to address specific audience and constituent requirements.
The components of the army brand include a brand Hierarchy, a brand Positioning Statement, Value Propositions, and a visual Identity System.
The end result is a single, unified brand that americans can understand and support, a brand that works in unison to recruit and maintain the all-Volunteer Force.

1.1 INTRODUCTION
The U.S. Army Brand positioning provides the foundation for the messaging that reaches across the Army organization.
The Brand Positioning Statement explains the what, how and why of what the Army does as an institution.
U.S. ARMY POSITIONING STATEMENT
THE U.S. ARMY IS THE NATION’S MOST VERSATILE
FORCE MEETING THE EVER-CHANGING CHALLENGES
OF TODAY.
IT HAS THE SCALE AND SCOPE TO ADAPT TO
CHALLENGES THAT ARISE BOTH AT HOME AND
ABROAD. THE ARMY IS CONSTANTLY EVOLVING ITS

1.2 BRAND POSITIONING
A brand hierarchy is the way an organization structures and connects its portfolio of offerings.
It ensures audiences are able to access the products and services they want, while understanding the full value of each element, as it relates to the whole portfolio.
The u.S. army brand Hierarchy organizes the portfolio based on four primary ways external audiences can serve in the army: full time in the active Component, part time in the reserve and National Guard Components, or as a civilian in the Civilian Service Component. These have been identified as the four “related-brands” under which all commands and organizations live.
This structure unites the portfolio by aligning commands and organizations. Internally, it will help groups think about “big army” first, while externally increasing the understanding of the structure of the institution and the different ways an individual can engage with the army.
The hierarchy helps to unify diverse marketing and communications efforts, deliver economies in future initiatives, and build long-term equity in the u.S. army brand. This will greatly improve effectiveness and facilitate a comprehensive and unified communications platform that is both meaningful and ownable.

1.3 THE U.S. ARMY BRAND HIERARCHY
Value propositions link the unique offerings of specific Army entities to the U.S. Army Brand Positioning. The value proposition for the Army National Guard articulates its offering for their specific audience. ARMY NATIONAL GUARD
The army National Guard is for those who want to protect their community, State and Nation with the flexibility to train and serve part-time close to home. Through advanced training, education benefits, and desire to help their community, Soldiers in the Guard develop skills and qualities that help them reach their full potential. The Guard’s dual mission gives the army local scale as the first military responders at home and support for the Nation’s missions abroad.
reLaTeD braNDS Value propositions for related brands link to the enterprise army brand positioning statement and highlight the unique aspect of each individual component.

ELEMENTS
LOGO
OUR LOGO IS THE HERO OF OUR VISUAL
IDENTITY SYSTEM. IT IS A BADGE OF
HONOR THAT SPEAKS TO WHAT MAKES
THE ARMY NATIONAL GUARD DISTINCT
AND YET DEEPLY CONNECTED TO THE
VISUAL LANGUAGE OF THE U.S. ARMY. IT IS
DESIGNED TO BRING OUR VALUES TO LIFE
ACROSS A VARIETY OF TOUCHPOINTS.
The Army National Guard logo, along with state and territory variations, should be the hero mark when developing external communication, replacing the current version of the red, white and blue Army National Guard logo (RWB logo). The RWB flag logo should no longer be used to represent the Army National Guard.
The National Guard (Minuteman) seal should not be used when developing external-facing marketing materials but can be used as part of internal presentations and internal communications.
The Army National Guard logo & identity system leverages in-depth learning and experience from the development of the Army Brand Identity and The Brand Portal, which provides access to the relevant Army National Guard brand elements including logo files, imagery and guidelines in order to produce consistent and compelling Army National Guard marketing materials.
LOGO FILES & DOWNLOADS
The Army National Guard Logo Guidelines should be read before using the logo in marketing materials. The logo artwork files should be downloaded from the Brand Portal Asset Library and should be used when developing new materials.
QUESTIONS & SUPPORT
The U.S Army Brand Portal Webmaster is available to answer questions, review material from a brand compliance perspective and guide you in the correct direction. Use the “Ask a Question” button to the right side of the U.S. Army Brand Portal page to submit your questions or materials for review.

2.3 OVERVIEW
The Army National Guard logo needs legibility and consistency to have an impact.
To maintain consistency, it’s important to use the logo at the right size relative to the area on which it appears.
For printed applications, use the guideline given here to determine the minimum logo size. If the logo size you require is not provided, divide the diagonal (corner to corner) measurement of the application by 11 and use that to determine the logo height.

2.4 STANDARD SIZES
Legibility of the Army National Guard logo artwork is critical, and it must be sized appropriately to be read easily on every application (print or digital).
use these guidelines to determine the minimum logo size.
ALL-TYPE TREATMENT
To ensure legibility, do not use the army National Guard logo if the required printing area is below the minimum size of
0.5 inches in height. Instead, use an all-type treatment. The example shown at right provides direction for the all-type treatment.
Do not use the all-type treatment when the printing area allows for the army National Guard logo to be used; i.e., above 0.5 inch in height.
The font used for the all type treatment should be the u.S.
army font, available for download from the u.S. army brand Portal. Never incorporate the star from the army National Guard logo, due to trademarking considerations.
PPI applications (e.g. pens, pencils, water bottles etc.) are the kinds of applications where the all-type treatment might be used, but should be considered on a case by case basis.
For further guidance and assistance use the ‘questions & support’ contact form within the ‘help’ section of the u.S. army brand Portal. Visit: https://usarmybrandportal.com
Do not scale the logo smaller than the sizes shown here.

CAMO
The Army Camo fabric was used as a design inspiration for the Related Brand holding device system. It is no intended to mirror current uniform patterns.
The larger shape is flexible in terms of size and proportion, while the smaller shape containing the logo has a fixed size and shape. The smaller shape can be positioned in one of the four corners of the larger shape, as shown throughout these guidelines.
For information on use of color, see Section 4.

Up to three Camo shapes can be used determined by the amount of copy needed for the communication.
On any piece of communication, up to three Camo shapes can be used.
There are two kinds of Camo shapes: predominant and supporting. Predominant Camo shapes always contain both the arNG logo along with text or headlines. Supporting Camo shapes are single rectangles and only contain headlines or text.
There can be one or two supporting Camo shapes, but they only appear if a predominant Camo shape is used.
The number of Camo shapes used will be dependent on how much copy is needed. a three tier system is in place to help structure and organize communications.
1. For communications where you are using a headline only, one Camo should be used. Predominant Camo shape contains headline and logo.
2. If additional supporting copy is required, introduce a second Camo shape. Supporting Camo shape contains headline, predominant Camo shape is used for supporting body copy and logo.
3. To organize a large amount of body copy when creating detailed communications, use a third Camo shape to ensure the content is clearly structured and displayed. Supporting Camo shapes contains headline and additional detailed information. Predominant Camo shapes should be used for supporting body copy and logo.
Camo shapes should be arranged in a staggered, random way to reflect the composition of the original Camo pattern and produce an authentic, spontaneous look.
NOTE:
For details on Camo shapes color and transparency within communication material, see page 34.

Information Level 1 Ensure the information is arranged in a hierarchy starting at the top or left of the page and working down or to the right. This ensures the messaging is clear and easy for the reader to follow.
Information Level 1 Information Level 2 Information Level 3
Information Level 2 Working down the page, ensure a clear distinction between the Headline and body text.
Information Level 3 Additional detailed information, to follow up on supporting body copy.
Avoid using an incorrect order of content as this confuses.
Ensure that the materials produced are easy to read and understand.
To do this, content should be laid out in a way that maps to how people take in information.
On a vertical layout this is from top to bottom, and on a horizontal layout, from left to right. The hierarchy of information should always follow this flow.
Start with the headline (Level 1) and step down clearly in size to Level 2 (and if necessary Level 3) information.

To ensure a consistent look across all applications, rules have been established to guide digital Camo corner radius across various format sizes.
PREDOMINANT CAMO
The corner radius should be 1/8 of the height of the logo, e.g., if the height of the logo is 80mm, the corner radius is 10mm. It is important that this rule be followed so that a consistent ratio is maintained.
The type within the larger shape and the logo within the smaller shape are both indented using the logo clear space, i.e., the height of the “NaTIONaL GuarD” in the logo.
Where the two shapes join, the “neck” is determined by overlapping both shapes at the point where their indent clear spaces intersect, i.e., the height of “NaTIONaL GuarD” in the logo.
SUPPORTING CAMO
The supporting Camo is constructed in exactly the same way as the predominant Camo but does not include the smaller shape containing the logo. The corner radius and type inset area needs to match the predominant Camo.
PREDOMINANT CAMO
SUPPORTING CAMO
The Army National Guard logo must always sit in the smaller Camo shape.
