About this file

This document is a technical specification for the design, fabrication, and testing of beamline diagnostic slits and screens for the Advanced Light Source Upgrade (ALS-U) project at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL).

The specification covers two types of diagnostics: a white beam slit for the COSMIC 7.0.1 beamline and pink beam slits and screens for the MAESTRO 7.0.2 and COSMIC 7.0.1 beamlines. It provides detailed performance requirements, such as aperture size, positioning accuracy, and stability, as well as general requirements related to ultra-high vacuum, electrical, and seismic design. The document also specifies factory acceptance testing procedures. Interface drawings are referenced to control the spatial envelopes and connection points for each diagnostic. The Subcontractor is expected to standardize the design of the pink beam slits and screens to the greatest extent possible.

5 INTRODUCTION

The purpose of this technical specification is to provide information needed by the

Subcontractor to design, fabricate, control and ship beamline diagnostic slits and screens for the ALS-U project. These diagnostics will be installed on the IDBL:

- COSMIC 7.0.1 dedicated to imaging techniques in the 164-2,500 eV nominal photon energy range

- MAESTRO 7.0.2 dedicated to angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy in the

20-960 eV nominal photon energy range

5.1 Requirement definition

Shall, should, may, and will are used to define every requirement listed in this document.

The definitions of these terms are as follows:

- Shall is a requirement that must be implemented

- Should indicates a desire and can be interpreted as ‘best effort’

- May indicates a desire and can be interpreted as ‘nice to have’

- Will is used to inform intent or declaration of purpose and is not a requirement ci al ly R el ea se d to th e

5.2 Identification number

Each requirement stated in this document shall have a unique ID NUM. Once an ID

NUM has been assigned to a specific requirement, the ID NUM cannot be changed or reassigned.

The ID NUM formant is as follows: QQQQ, where QQQQ is a unique four digit number.

6 OVERVIEW

Each of the diagnostics comes with unique requirements for design, fabrication, and testing. The sections applicable to the diagnostics are subdivided into three subsections:

- Performance: for key performance features, including precision and stability

- Internals: for materials that can intercept the beam

- Port: for required ports, and their vacuum components

In addition, all diagnostics must meet shared requirements as specified in Section 8.6.1, and must undergo FAT as outlined in Section 0.

6.1 Scope

The diagnostics detailed within this technical specification are listed in Table 6.1. The pink beam slit and screen will share a granite support system, ultimately becoming a unit and shipped as a unit. Table 6.1 also identifies the interface drawing for each diagnostic that controls the entrance and exit flanges and the maximum spatial envelope. While the interface drawings are unique, the Subcontractor should place significant emphasis on standardizing the design of the pink beam slit and screen to the greatest extent possible for each diagnostic type.

Table 6.1. Diagnostics described in this technical specification and the interface drawing.

6.3 Environment

All diagnostics will operate at the experimental floor of the ALS facility. The requirements listed throughout this document shall be guaranteed by the Subcontractor in an environment with comparable humidity, temperature stability and floor vibration levels.

The temperature is set to 22.5 °C ± 1.5 °C. Figure 6.1 shows the integrated rms displacements, which are about 5.6 nm and 22 nm RMS integrated above 10 Hz in the lateral and vertical directions respectively. Strong external disturbances can be seen at specific frequencies, specifically at 60 Hz in the vertical direction and at 120 Hz in the lateral direction. The Subcontractor shall design diagnostics that avoid resonance at these frequencies. LBNL can provide the vibration data to help the Subcontractor quantify the environment and optimize the diagnostics designs.

8.6.1 Radiation

The Subcontractor must design and fabricate vacuum chambers that meet LBNL’s shielding requirements to ensure the protection of personnel from synchrotron radiation.

The minimum stainless steel equivalent thicknesses are:

ID NUM DEF Requirement Description Value Unit

0091 Should For indirect radiation in white-beam >6 mm

0092 Should For indirect radiation in pink-beam >1 mm

The slit’s blades shall meet the requirements listed in 0014 and 0033, in the direction of beam propagation. All components of the vacuum chambers shall meet the requirements for indirect radiation. Commercial components and bellows shall be enclosed to ensure proper shielding. Alternatively, the subcontractor may opt for internal port covers, as shown in the figure below. These covers create a 'labyrinth' structure that can shield against scattered synchrotron radiation. It's important to note that welds are not credited for radiation shielding; therefore, require special considerations. Direct lines of sight through the weld from the optic to the outside shall be avoided, for example, as illustrated in Figure 8.1 below, using 'labyrinth' welds rather than corner or butt welds.

8.6.3 Seismic

The seismic anchorage shall be designed by LBNL. To this purpose, LBNL will design a mounting plate following the mounting plate tapped hole layout proposed by the

Subcontractor. LBNL incurs all associated costs, however the Subcontractor shall provide the following parameters and implement all recommendations made by the LBNL

Structural Engineer.

ID NUM Requirement

The Subcontractor shall provide the following parameters:

- The weight of the diagnostic

- The overall height, width, and depth

- The dimensioned location for the center of gravity (height and in plan)

- The magnitude and location of all vacuum loads on the diagnostic

In addition, the Subcontractor shall provide calculations that show that the systems, comply with the California Building Code. The design and calculations shall be reviewed and approved by the LBNL Structural Engineer. The seismic load requirements are around 0.37 g-force vertically and 1.00 g-force laterally, in any direction. LBNL may assist the Subcontractor in defining the seismic load requirements.

0098 The diagnostics shall comply with the California Building Code

9 FAT

The Subcontractor shall develop a FATP that demonstrates that all requirements listed throughout this specification are met in an environment that should be comparable to the

ALS. The FATP should be divided in four inspections: general inspection, UHV acceptance, positioning performance of the controlled axes, and stability performance.

ID NUM Requirement

All FAT shall be reported in written form and an electronic copy of all results shall be provided ci al ly R el ea se d to th e

9.1 General inspection

The internal mechanics dimensional and geometric tolerances shall be measured on a

CMM

0101 Straightness of each blade shall be measured

Blade to blade parallelism for each blade pair shall be measured at the following locations: 10%, 25%, 50%, and 75% from each end.

0103 The linear travels of the motorized axes shall be measured

0104 All hard stops shall be tested by direct collisions at maximum speed at least five times

The water-cooling system shall be tested for at least 10 min at maximum pressure and flow and no leak shall appear

0106 Full dimensional reports of the parts credited in the shielding drawing

0107 The result of the water pressure drop measurement shall be provided.

9.2 UHV acceptance

The Subcontractor shall perform final UHV acceptance tests following AL-1220-7841 requirements in Section 14 of that document, including:

- Bakeout, Section 14.1

- RGA, Section 14.2

- Outgassing measurement, Section 4.3

- Final leak test, Section 14.4

9.3 Positioning performance

Position repeatability, minimum incremental motion, and parasitic error motions (i.e.

angular, straightness, backlash, and vibration) shall be evaluated by measuring each individual axis. The procedure should be performed in vacuum with water-cooling at nominal flow and pressure.

ID NUM Requirement

Blade position repeatability at various positions (bidirectional, at least 20 consecutive cycles, reported as min/max), and minimum incremental motion, of all controlled axes shall be evaluated and reported

Screen position repeatability at various positions (bidirectional, at least 20 consecutive extension travel cycles), and minimum incremental motion, of all controlled axes shall be evaluated and reported

9.4 Stability performance

Stability typically suffers from external disturbances (e.g. background noise and thermal effects) and internal disturbances (e.g. water-cooling, vacuum equipment, system heating). The stability of each slit blade and screen shall be evaluated independently relative to ground motion. The procedure should be performed in vacuum with water-cooling at nominal flow and pressure. Unfiltered data shall be reported. The temperature and the floor vibration shall also be monitored and reported. Finally, the requirement shall be compared to the measured motion reported as the rms >10Hz.

ID NUM Requirement

The extended position stability of each slit blade shall be measured (>/=400 Hz for 5 min at 1 kHz sampling)

The extended position stability of the screens shall be measured (>/=400 Hz for 5 min at 1 kHz sampling)

10 LABELLING

0113 Each diagnostic assembly shall be serialized as indicated by LBNL

The outside chamber of each diagnostic shall be engraved to include the beamline name and the diagnostic label per Table 6.1 (e.g. COSMIC 7.0.1 AP101) ci al ly R el ea se d to th e
