About this file
This is a Job Specification document for naval maintenance work on the USS TRIPOLI (LHA-7). The document details the removal, disassembly, rewind, and reinstallation of the No.5 Air Conditioning Chilled Water Pump Motor, a 200 horsepower electric motor manufactured by Hansome Energy Systems (Model A-507-331, Frame 507, 3600 RPM, 440 VAC, 3-phase, 220 amps) currently located in Auxiliary Machinery Room No. 2.
The work scope requires accomplishing standard motor maintenance procedures including disassembly and inspection (009-033), cleaning and preservation of motor housing and components (009-032), and balancing of rotating assemblies (009-015). The motor must be delivered to SRF Production Shop S51 for core loss testing with submission of measurement data per the enclosed form (Enclosure B). A critical requirement involves fabricating and installing a new information plate stating "Future Rewind With Sealed Insulation" per NSTM Chapter 300 Rev.11. The motor will be rewound using Class F conventional insulation rather than the original Sealed Insulation System (SIS) due to schedule urgency and facility limitations, authorized by Design Branch Code S241 per ESR LHA7-0089. The anticipated award date is July 24, 2026, with a production completion date of October 30, 2026. Work period runs from August 17, 2026 to November 30, 2026, with the operation to be performed at Sasebo. Government-furnished materials include six specific gaskets, washers, deflectors, and nuts identified by part numbers and stock numbers. The document emphasizes that subsequent rewinds must use SIS and recommends future procurement of a replacement SIS motor or engagement of a NAVSEA-certified facility for SIS rewind capability.

Enclosures: None.
Background:
(1) Reference (a) requested SRF-JRMC Det. Sasebo Design Branch Code S24l to provide technical assistance to rewind No. 5 AC Chilled water pump motor with Class F conventional insulation (non-SIS) . This motor was originally equipped with a Sealed Insulation System (SIS)
(2) Per reference (b), the motor is specified to have SIS insulation. However, SRF-JRMC Det. Sasebo does not possess the certified capability to perform SIS rewinds.
(3) Reference (c), paragraph 4.1, requires that SIS rewinds be performed by a NAVSEA-certified facility. Although SRF-JRMC Yokosuka (X5l) is the nearest former certified facility, it cannot support this rewind since the motor's stator weight exceeds the 800 kg limit of its VPI equipment, as noted in reference 2.2 of reference (a)
(4) References (d) and (e), authorize a one-time rewind of an SIS motor with a non-SIS if it is urgent and the time to rewind with SIS will result in a significant impact to ship's schedule. Procuring a new replacement SIS motor for No. 5 AC Chilled water pump will not meet the ship's schedule.
(5) SRF-JRIvIC Det. Sasebo has verified that there is no existing information plate or maintenance history indicating this motor was previously rewound with a non-SIS system.
Designer's Comments:
(1) Rewind the No. 5 AC Chilled water pump motor using a Class F conventional insulation system.
(2) Fabricate and install a new information plate on the motor enclosure per reference (d), paragraph 300-4.5.7.6.b. (4). The plate shall be made of corrosion-resistant steel and must state: "Future Rewind With Sealed Insulation."

TITLE: No.5 A/C Chilled Water Pump Motor; remove and install
Rev-1(FO)-- No.5 A/C Chilled Water Pump Motor; rewind
(3) Submit satisfactory shop no-load test data to Design Branch Code S241 to support submission of an information-only Liaison Action Request (LAR) required by paragraph 3.b. (2) of reference (e)
(4) Per references (d) and (e), this conventional rewind is authorized only as an emergent repair and subsequent rewind of this motor must be performed using SIS. A conventional rewind will not be authorized for next repair without formal DFS approval.
(5) For future planning, Design Branch Code S241 recommends two primary options for the next repair cycle:
a. Procure a new replacement SIS motor to coincide with the original insulation design, reference (b)
b. Send the existing motor to a NAVSEA-certified facility with the capability to perform an SIS rewind on a motor of this size.
(6) This concludes the design action for ESR LHA7 -0089.
