About this file
This is a Procurement Specification for an image intensifier tube and associated components required for the FNAL MI8 Line Halo Monitor diagnostic device at Fermilab. The specification was issued on July 1, 2026, and requires procurement of a fast-gated, MCP-based image intensifier capable of detecting low-level optical emissions from high-intensity proton beam halo interactions for integration into a halo monitor camera system.
The image intensifier tube must have a spectral response range of 160–900 nm with a multialkali photocathode, minimum effective area of 18 mm diameter, and a 2-stage MCP configuration. Performance specifications require a luminous gain minimum of 3×10⁵, resolution of at least 40 min lp/mm, and gate time (FWHM) of minimum 5 ns. The phosphor screen must be P46 or equivalent in light intensity and decay time. The procurement also includes a power supply module with over-light interlock capability that turns off the MCP and screen, resettable via external 5 V power supply, and supports gating using an external pulser with ≥5 ns gate duration. The system must operate in a beamline environment at temperatures ranging from -20 to +40 °C and survive elevated radiation levels, with demonstrated operation in accelerator environments desired. A mechanical housing matching the physical shape and size of the intensifier and compatible with a 1:1 relay lens for connection to a 1-inch C-mount camera is also required. All components must be delivered to Fermilab Receiving in Batavia, Illinois within 6 months of the procurement contract signature date.

1 Introduction A new diagnostic device called a halo monitor will be installed in the Fermilab Main Accelerator Complex.
The halo monitor requires a fast-gated, MCP-based image intensifier capable of detecting low-level optical emissions from high-intensity proton beam halo interactions. This specification defines procurement requirements for the image intensifier tube, power supply, housing, and relay optics needed for integration into the halo monitor camera system.
2 Component Description
2.1 Image Intensifier Tube
• Spectral Response Range: 160–900 nm
• Photocathode: Multialkali
• Minimum Effective Area: 18 mm diameter
• MCP: 2-stage MCP
• Phosphor Screen Compatibility: P46 or screen has light intensity and decay time equivalent to P46
2.2 Environmental conditions
• Operating Temperature: -20 to +40 °C
• The system will be operated in a beamline environment and will need to survive in elevated radiation levels. Demonstrated operation in accelerator environments is desired.
2.3 Optical & Performance Specifications
• Luminous Gain: 3×10⁵ minimum
• Resolution: 40 min lp/mm minimum
• Gate Time (FWHM): 5 ns minimum
