RESPONSES TO PREBID REQUEST FOR INFORMATION

Project Number 820-MM24-03B Bridge and Emery Creek Stabilization at Quincy National Cemetery Solicitation #: 36C78624B0029 Question 1:

RE: specifications 04 05 13 2.1 HYDRAULIC LIME Can the Hydraulic Lime Tuckpoint Mortar be replaced with the attached Spec Mix type O for the bridge and type N for the creek wall?

The main difference is the small amount of portland in the Spec Mix type O as opposed to no portland in the proposed hydraulic lime product. The main difference we have found is there is absolutely no workability with the proposed hydraulic lime product. The process for repointing using the hydraulic lime product is much more difficult and time consuming, and almost impossible to use for this application.

Response NO – NHL was spec’d for a reason and must be used.

Question 2:

Can you also confirm that removing the existing shoring/cribbing in the middle and far right tunnels and repairing the displaced lower stone area in the middle tunnel is in fact included in the scope of work?

Response The Shoring removal is part of the Statement of Work.

Repairs to the bridge stone and mortar is part of the Statement of Work.

Question 3:

Is mortar analysis required to confirm Natural Hydraulic Lime Mortar?

Response NO – based on the period of construction NHL is the appropriate replacement mortar.

Question 4:

If mortar analysis is required, which of the following NHL mortars are to be used? 2, 3.5, or 5

Response 3.5

Question 5:

Scope calls for 241 LF of repointing can a SF be given for bidding purposes?

Response Estimated at 5500 sq ft. for the northern wall between the creek and the cemetery headstones. More repointing is needed for the bridge itself this estimate is only for the northern creek bank wall. (271’ x 22’ = 550 approx.)

Question 6:

Scope calls for resetting of loose stones and regrouting. Can a SF be given for bidding purposes?

Response Contractor to assume a minimum of 100 SF and provide a cost per SF over the 100sf.

Question 7:

Scope says" as indicated and needed" can an estimated percentage be given for anticipated amount "needed."

Response Only do any visible damaged/cracked areas which accounts for approximately 70% of the bridge.

Question 8:

Scope calls for repairs to arches and piers site plan only highlights in yellow the stone adjacent to Emery Creek. Are the arches included in scope of work?

Response Yes

Question 9:

If arches are included, is both sides (upstream or downstream) scheduled for repairs?

Response Yes

Question 10:

Is the underside of the arches included in the scope of work.

Response Yes there is approximately 70% of the total area requires tuck pointing on the underside of the arches due to water levels rising and lowering and tree debris damaging the grout.

Question 11:

Can an approximate SF be given for the to the area to receive rip rap?

Response 271 linear ft x 22ft height estimated from top to bottom sloped at approximately 45 degrees for southern part of creek small rip rap = 5,400 sq ft plus approximately 1,600sq ft for the larger rip rap areas.

Question 12:

Can an approximate SF be given of the wall to be cleaned?

Response Estimated at 2,300 sq ft of overburden on the wall with an estimated depth of 12’’overall (estimated).

Additional comments:

Provide an add to dredge the (16” deep) creek bed. Do not excavate below the top of bridge footing.

Photo 1:

Provide stone and grout similar to shaded area on opposite 2 sites of bridge.

Photo 2:

Install rip rap of 6-8” stone, landscape fabric over excavated area 6-8” deep above existing retaining wall. 271’ long by 8’ fence to top of existing retaining wall. Indicated in red below.
