E. Provide certificates that each Product complies with this Specification and the referenced standards.

F. Qualifications of Welder shall be submitted prior to any welding on existing structures.

1.5 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. The Contractor shall provide laborers and supervisors who are thoroughly familiar with the type of work, materials, and techniques specified.

B. All submittals shall be submitted and approved by the Project Manager prior to any work.

C. Upon receipt at the job site, all materials shall be checked to ensure that no damage occurred during shipping or handling.

D. Materials shall be stored in such a manner to protect against damage, weather, vandalism and theft.

E. Contractor shall provide a Construction Warranty: FAR clause 52.246 21, "Warranty of Construction." Warranty shall cover any defects in material finish, including cracking, peeling, chipping, blistering or corroding.

F. Provide Fence Manufacturer's Warranty: Warrant decorative fences and gates against material and manufacturing defects for five (5) years.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.1 GENERAL

A. Steel material for fence posts, panels, and pickets shall conform to the requirements of ASTM F2408 – “Standard Specification for Ornamental Fences

Employing Galvanized Steel Tubular Pickets”.

32 31 20 - 3

B. Pickets shall be galvanized 1” square x 14 Ga. tubing. Pickets shall be spaced to match existing spacing in fence panel (6-inch on center).

Pickets shall have top crushed and cut spear point to match existing pickets. Pickets shall be attached to fence panel rails by welding.

C. Panels shall be all galvanized with rails to match existing (1.00” x 1.50” x .105” x 14 Ga.). Pickets in Panels shall be as outlined in 2.1.B. Panels shall have the same number and location of rails as the existing fence located in the Project area.

D. Posts shall be 2-inch square (12 Ga.) galvanized with flat metal cap. All

Posts being replaced shall include providing a 12-inch square by 30-inch depth concrete base (4000 psi). Fence Post shall be a minimum 24-inches into the concrete base.

2.2 FABRICATION

A. Pickets, rails and posts shall be pre-cut to specified lengths.

B. The manufactured fence system shall meet the vertical load, horizontal load, and infill performance requirements for Industrial weight fences under ASTM F2408.

C. The aligned pickets and rails shall be joined at each picket-to-rail intersection by fusion welding or welding process to match existing finished look at the Project area.

D. Panels and Posts shall be capable of supporting 300 lb. load applied at midspan without permanent deformation.

E. Provide metal fence posts, panels, and pickets from one manufacturer.

2.3 HARDWARE

A. Brackets, Fittings, and all Hardware shall be hot-dipped galvanized with similar primer and epoxy paint finish.

B. Brackets and fasteners used for mounting Panels shall have a shear strength equal to or greater than the horizontal rail material, coated to meet the same standards of the fence components.

2.4 CLEANING & PREPARATION OF EXISTING METAL SURFACES

A. Prior to attachment of Panels to Posts or Pickets to Panels clean and prepare metal surfaces with a phosphate conversion coating for improved corrosion resistance and enhanced coating adhesion. Material shall conform with MPI No. 25 “Cleaner, Etching, for Galvanized Metal” product.

32 31 20 - 4

B. Provide Primer to all cleaned surfaces that conform with MPI No. 20

“Primer, Zinc Rich, Epoxy” approved product.

2.5 PAINTING OF NEW METAL SURFACES

A. Provide minimum of two (2) coats of epoxy paint to all new galvanized metal surfaces that comply with either MPI No. 108 “Epoxy, High Build, Low Gloss” approved products or MPI No. 120 “Epoxy, High Build, Self-

Priming, Low Gloss” approved products.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 GENERAL

A. Install fence posts, panels, and pickets in according to manufacturer's instructions and referenced standards.

B. When cutting or drilling fence panels, rails, or posts; remove all metal shavings from cut area.

C. Fence panels shall be attached to posts with brackets supplied by the manufacturer.

D. When attaching Pickets to fence panel rails weld in accordance with

American Welding Society (AWS) D11.2:1989(R2006) “GUIDE FOR WELDING IRON

CASTINGS (HISTORICAL)”.

E. All new Posts shall be set in concrete footers having a minimum depth of

30-inches. Posts setting by other methods such as plated posts or grouted core-drilled footers are permissible only if shown by engineering analysis to be sufficient in strength for the intended application.

3.2 CLEANING AND PAINT REMOVAL

A. Cleaning and restoration techniques are potentially dangerous and shall be carried out only by experienced and qualified workers using proper eye protection, protective clothing, and other workplace safety conditions.

B. When there is extensive failure of the protective coating and / or when heavy corrosion exists, the rust and all the paint must be removed to prepare the surfaces for new protective coatings.

C. When using a phosphate conversion coating for improved corrosion resistance and enhanced coating adhesion that conforms with MPI No. 25

“Cleaner, Etching, for Galvanized Metal” approved products. Follow

Manufacturers product data sheet for the use on steel or galvanized metal surfaces. Before selecting a cleaning process, test panels should be

32 31 20 - 5 prepared on the existing metal surface to be cleaned to determine the relative effectiveness of various techniques.

D. Hand scraping, chipping, and wire brushing shall be carried out by only experienced craftsmen when removal of paint and corrosion from the existing metal surfaces is needed as part of the work.

3.3 PAINTING AND COATING SYSTEMS

A. Thorough surface preparation is necessary for the adhesion of new protective coatings. All loose, flaking, and deteriorated paint must be removed from the metal, as well as dirt and mud, water-soluble salts, oil, and grease.

B. For the paint to adhere properly, the metal surfaces must be dry before painting. Paint should not be applied when there is fog, mist, or rain in the air.

C. Painting shall not take place when the temperature is expected to fall below 50 degrees Fahrenheit within 24 hours or when the relative humidity is above 80 per cent.

D. Apply zinc-rich primer to thoroughly cover cut edge and/or drilled hole;

let dry. Once dry, apply two (2) coats of custom finish epoxy paint matching fence color.

E. All primers, base coats, and finishes shall be applied by brushing. The use of rollers and spray guns is not allowed.

F. Touch up damaged factory finishes with galvanized repair paint and repair painted surfaces with touch up primer and epoxy paint as specified in

Part 2 - PRODUCTS.

3.4 CLEAN UP

A. Clean exposed surfaces and remove all contaminants and stains from metal surfaces in the Project area.

B. Clean site of excess materials, post hole excavations, and debris removed or scattered uniformly.

C. Restore areas around Fence Post to match existing conditions.

D. Dispose of all excess material off site in conformance with local and state regulations and requirements.
