When using thermoplastic materials, the crack should be filled to slightly below the surface to allow for expansion when hot.
E. The reservoir method should be used for all “working cracks”. In the reservoir method, the crack is cut or routed to form a reservoir that is filled with the Crack Seal material.
F. When routing or sawing is incorporated, cracks need to be cleaned and dried prior to application of the filler or sealant. Hot air blasting using a hot compressed air heat lance will be required for this Project.
G. “Over-band” and “Band-Aid” Crack Seal treatment finishes is not acceptable with Slurry Seal coat treatment proposed in this Project.
H. If cracks in the existing pavement are greater than 1 inch wide, the
Contractor shall repair per the Caltrans “Standard Specifications”. Such work if approved by the Project Manager may require a Change Order.
I. Hot applied Crack sealants require a specific cure time prior to being covered with a seal. This Project will require a thirty (30) day period
32 12 36 - 13 between the Crack Seal Treatment and the Slurry Seal Coat Treatment. A shorter cure time for the Crack Seal Treatment will be considered by the
Project Manager if the Contractor can provide supporting documentation that the Crack Seal material and the Slurry Seal emulsion is compatible for the proposed cure time.
J. The Contractor shall remove all thermoplastic pavement markings and sweep the entire roadway surface. All paved surfaces must be clean and free from all loose material, debris, and dirt.
K. All existing stray and overwide rubber crack sealant material on the paved surface shall be removed by the Contractor from the pavement. Such preparation work shall be inspected by the COR prior to proceeding with the Slurry Seal coat treatment.

D. Slurry Seal preparation and placement shall be in conformance with section
37-3.01C “Construction” of the Caltrans “Standard Specifications”.
E. Spread the Slurry Seals uniformly and do not spot, re-handle, or shift the mixture. In areas inaccessible to spreading equipment, spread the
Slurry Seal mixture with hand tools or other authorized methods. Hand squeegees and brushes shall be acceptable in areas where practicality prohibits the use of mechanized equipment.
F. Ensure that an enough Slurry Seal coat material is carried in all parts of the Spreader Box at all times so that complete coverage of the treated surface can be achieved.
32 12 36 - 14
G. Significant streaks, such as those caused by oversized aggregate or broken mix, shall not be left in the finished surface. If excessive streaking occurs, the job will be stopped by the COR until the cause of the problem has been corrected.
H. The suggested Slurry Seal (TYPE I) application is 10 - 12 lbs./yd2. The suggested application rates are based upon the weight of dry aggregate in the mixture. Application rates are affected by the unit weight and gradation of the aggregate and the demand of the surface to which the

If necessary, the area to be hand worked shall be lightly dampened prior to mix placement. Handwork shall exhibit the same finish as that applied by the Spreader Box and shall be completed prior to final surfacing.
M. Care shall be taken to apply straight lines along curbs, shoulders, and intersections. No run-off on these areas will be permitted. Roofing felt paper or heavy plastic may be used to begin or end a pull cleanly.
N. Parking areas should be rolled by a self-propelled, 10-ton (maximum) pneumatic tire roller equipped with a water spray system. All tires should be inflated per manufacturer’s specifications. Rolling shall not start until the Slurry Seal has cured sufficiently to avoid damage by the roller. Areas which require rolling shall receive a minimum of three (3) full coverage passes.
O. When corrections to the Slurry Seal work is required, the COR shall approve the Contractor’s method of correction.
P. Maintain the new Slurry Seal coat surface in an acceptable condition until final acceptance of the work has been approved by the COR.
32 12 36 - 15
