About this file

This document includes a space program and federal contract opportunity for the construction of a new outpatient mental health addition. The space program outlines the required spaces and square footage needs, including a reception area, exam rooms, counseling offices, group therapy rooms, and staff areas. The related federal contract opportunity is a pre-solicitation notice seeking an architectural-engineering firm to provide design services. Key requirements include experience with hospital and mental health facility design, constructing additional floors, and use of high-pressure steam systems. Responses are due by August 27, 2019. The contract value is estimated between $10-20 million. The opportunity is set aside for small disabled veteran-owned businesses. The selected firm will provide design, construction documentation, and construction period services to construct a second floor mental health addition to an existing VA medical center building in Grand Junction, Colorado.

PLANNING AND DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS

1. Configure patient waiting area with partitions to provide clustered seating and privacy, in order to reduce large waiting spaces and to improve patient environment and reduce noise and confusion. A Women Veterans sub-waiting area may be provided within Waiting, and located adjacent to the patient care spaces.

2. Plan to minimize walking distances for patients from building main entrance to clinical destination and from clinical waiting area to clinical exam or treatment space.

3. Centralize check-in/check-out

4. Design corridors a minimum of six (6) feet in width, to accommodate passage of two (2) wheelchairs.

5. In order to accommodate the designated equipment and a patient in a wheelchair, Exam and Treatment Rooms require a minimum clear dimension of 10'-0”.

6. The offices and group therapy rooms should provide a level of privacy for the confidential nature of the treatment program. Loud conversation should not be discernible outside the treatment room.

7. Security and safety devices should be tamper proof. Architectural design should accommodate the requirements for the handicapped.
