Statement of Work

Service Care Line: Medical Care Line Department: Cancer Center Project: Accreditation Survey for the Cancer Program

I. Introduction

The Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center Cancer Program is tentatively scheduled to be surveyed on April 2026 by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (ACS CoC). This is a comprehensive virtual or on-site survey of the entire cancer program’s compliance level with all applicable standards. The ACS CoC survey includes:

•Assessment of compliance with all the new standards (Cancer Program Standards 2020:

Revised Edition for 2025.) The updated standards (Cancer Program Standards 2020:

Optimal Resources for Cancer Care for 2023, 2024, and 2025 activities. Data for these years is only found in the historical SAR).

• The new SAR will capture 2023, 2024, and 2025 information that is needed for survey.

II. Project Scope

Healthcare organizations must undergo a rigorous evaluation process and performance review every three years, to maintain their status as an approved cancer center. Commission on Cancer approved programs represent about 1,500 CoC-accredited cancer programs in the U.S. and Puerto Rico approximately 20% of all acute care hospitals, but they diagnose and treat 85% of all cancer patients in the country.

By setting such rigorous standards, the Commission on Cancer ensures that patients receiving treatment from approved programs have access to:

• Quality care close to home

• Comprehensive care offering a range of state-of-the-art services and equipment

• A multi-specialty, team approach to coordinate the best treatment options available to cancer patients

• Access to cancer-related information, education, and support

• A cancer registry that collects data on type and stage of cancers and treatment results, and offers lifelong patient follow-up

• Ongoing monitoring and improvement of care

• Information about ongoing clinical trials and new treatment options

A final report of the survey, both written and electronic, will be submitted within 6 weeks, detailing findings of non-compliance, areas of vulnerability, and recommendations for improvement, targeted to bring the facility into compliance with ACoS requirements. A recommended plan of action to clear up all the deficiencies is also included.
