Quasar MRID3D (5.0 mm) MR Image Distortion System – Brand name only

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE:

The Milwaukee VAMC’s Radiation Oncology Dept. has a procurement need of a QUASAR MRID3D (5.0mm) - MR Image Distortion System – Brand name only. The equipment and software will be utilized for quality assurance of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) equipment particularly in Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS) for brain tumors. In addition to the typical radiology need for superior image quality, radiation oncology application also requires high geometrical precision. The use of MR imaging in cranial Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS) where high doses are delivered to ablate small lesions often near sensitive normal structures underscores the need for geometrical precision. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is increasingly critical in radiation oncology, particularly in Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS) for brain tumors, where extremely high doses are delivered with very tight margins. In this setting, even small geometric distortions in MRI scans can compromise treatment accuracy and inadvertently affect target coverage and normal tissue sparing. Appropriate periodic quality assurance of the MRI scanner performance with geometric distortions is crucial to ensuring safe and precise delivery of SRS treatment to the veterans. The requested system must be capable of quick setup, scan, and quantification of geometric distortions within 10 minutes. This device is the only solution that can meet the Radiation Oncology Dept’s operational and clinical requirements. Using any system other than the QUASAR brand of MR Image Distortion System would introduce unacceptable clinical risk and negatively impacting the patient care.

Salient Characteristics/Requirements:

Quasar MRID3D (5.0 mm) MR Image Distortion System – brand name only -quick setup, scan, and quantification of geometric distortions within 10 minutes

MRI Geometric Image Distortion Quality Assurance Phantom -1,496 5mm fiducial markers -37cm x 32 cm field of view -lightweight hollow acrylic phantom -25 liter internal hollow volume -density: 1.18 g/cm^3 -weight: 21 kg -volume susceptibility: -9.01 x 10^-6 @ 20 degrees C -Contrast media: 5 Liters of high T1 contrast Paraffinic Mineral Oil

* Complete phantom pre-filled with mineral oil with patented expansion reservoir -Mineral oil has inherently physiological T1 and T2 -Mineral oil is preferred filler for MRI of field strength of 3T and above due to issues with dielectric resonance effect -Eliminates need for doping of water with contrast agents, therefore reducing error -Mineral oil is not absorbed (unlike water) by the acrylic shell of the phantom thus providing more stable phantom dimensions -recessed handles -3 point contact feet -under 50 lbs

-removable XYZ orientation and scale cuboid, allows for task specific objects for image guidance applications -Analyze entire 3D field of view in a single acquisition -includes Case for phantom

QA capabilities include:

-rapid ferrous content detection QA procedure -Submillimeter Laser Landmark Alignment Check

* Use of spherical harmonic algorithm to analyze geometric distortion -Provides sub-millimeter measurement accuracy

* Provides separate BO (first magnetic field) and GNL (gradient non-linearities) distortion measurements -Separates sources of distortion errors -Characterization of Z gradient Non-linearity -Phantom position and twist verification

Quality Assurance Analysis Software -1 perpetual software license -unlimited scans -DICOM Receiver -Automated Control point detection and harmonic analysis -ability to separate distortions caused by main magnetic field inhomogeneities from those caused by gradient non-linearities -allows ability to target a region of interest for demanding applications such as SRS -allows trending and comparison amongst diverse selection of phantom scans -allows exporting customizable automated reports including full DVF spreadsheets

Place of Performance Clement Zablocki VA Medical Center Oncology Dept.
