Rec Room 3160 Lower Roof Rafters Information provided a lintel design for 12” wide door opening.
• I believe the walls are 10” block, furred out with stud wall on the hallway/kitchen side. This should be verified before finalizing the bottom plate size on the lintel beam VA Reply : Blocks are 12”
• It may be that the lower roof mono-trusses sit on the furred stud wall, from what it looked like in the attic space. HOWEVER, I could not see if that was true, or if there was a ledger supporting the lower roof trusses as well. You should assume the lower trusses are also supported by the CMU, unless you can climb in the attic and verify otherwise.
VA Reply: The rafters are supported by a 2x4 ledger that is glued and bolted to the CMU - See photos at end of this document.
• From a walk in the basement, it appears the rec room is slab on grade – VA Reply: True
• There is a crawl space along the north wall of the house. Could not determine how long toward the east it travels. Verify before using the entrance from the porch at the north east corner.
VA Reply: Crawl space extends to garage wall.
• There is basement to the south of the rec room.
• With these crawl spaces and basements, be careful to provide enough support for your shoring/needling support loads. Best to use the slab on grade rec room as much as possible, or shore down in basement space as well.
• Installation of the beam and bearing conditions will require demo and repair of the hallway/kitchen stud walls – maybe ceilings depending on support during installation
• Design may require a W16x26.
• Provide a lintel plate along the bottom of the W16 of a width needed for the CMU wall thickness. If 10” CMU, I would suggest 3/8” x 9” plate. – VA Reply: CMU blocks are 12”
• The CMU jambs of the wall are probably grouted full, but verify. If not, grout those cores fully.
• Provide 8” bearing each end
• Lintel plate can extend into wall as bearing plate. Use (2) ½” diameter expansion anchors (1 each side of the beam ) - 6” embed, into the grouted core at each end of the beam. Use slotted holes in the beam and plate at both ends to allow for some field adjustment and temperature movements.
• The W16 should have tie wires in the web so the face shells can be tied to beam so they do not fall out.
