Requests for Information (RFIs)

1. As far as the “urethane injection grouting”; we will need the entire area surrounding the bell tower excavated for crew access to top of footing. It’s the only way we can meet the injection area under the inner side of the footings. The Geotech report outlines in great detail the requirements for this; OSHA benching which may require removal of sidewalk, closing road during work, removal/replacement of topsoil, backfill testing, etc. Not to mention the challenges working around the existing water line and sanitary. We will not be able to perform injections from ground surface as called out on S401, Urethan Grout Soil Improvement Note, # 2.

Response: Refer to Answer to question #5.

2. What is the thickness of the stone masonry walls and buttress combined? Response:

3. 5/A401 states that “stair to remain under deduct alternate 2”. Stair must be removed to complete injections on north bell tower foundation.

Response: Refer to Answer to question #5.

4. 5/A401 shows a water and sanitary line. Geotechnical report recommends the water line be relocated if possible or leak tested.

a. Will these be relocated to allow excavation? Response: Excavation not permitted. Refer to Answer to question #5.

b. Have they been leak tested? Response: No.

c. What is their elevation? Response: Unknown.

5. Section 31 32 23/3.1/A says that all injections will be accomplished from ground surface. Injections must be made from foundation elevation. Please confirm this is acceptable/understood.

Response: Due to the condition/stability of the existing tower, structure urethane injection is required to be performed from the (Interior/Exterior) ground surface. Access to footings may also be made from within the church basement. No Deep Excavations Permitted at the tower.

6. Section 31 32 23/3.2/B/3.

a. Where will the bearing plate test location be?

Response: Bearing plate test will be performed in the green space north of the existing drive, in line with the east wall of the tower. This location is designated by a square on the site plan A/S101.

b. Since acceptance of the stabilization is based on the bearing test, how will it be verified that foundation soils are replicated in this test?

Response: Grouting will be performed at a similar distance above the bedrock as the tower footing grouting. Soil overburden will furnish the confinement for the grout. Since the soil layer is thin between the tower footing and the underlying bedrock it will be assumed that the actual in place bearing capacity will exceed that of the test location.

7. Can the VA provide any specs on the sink / faucet / fixtures shown associated with note 22.06 on A103? Response: The basis-of-design manufacturer(s) and model(s) as follows:

1. FIXTURE: CORIAN ELEMENTS #881P

2. SUPPLY TRIM: CHICAGO FAUCET MODEL #200-AHA8E35-

317AB

3. SUPPLY/STOP: MCGUIRE MODEL #LFBV2165C

4. WASTE TRIM: ELKAY MODEL #LK35 – VERIFY DRAIN SIZE

PRIOR TO ORDERING TRIM

5. TRAP/FIXTURE DRAIN: MCGUIRE MODEL #8912CBECO

6. MOUNTING HEIGHT: C’TOP

7. FLOW: 1.5 GPM

8. CONTROL: MANUAL

9. SUPPLY: 0.5” DCW / 0.5” DHW

10. WASTE & TRIM: FIX. OUTLET: 1.5” / TRAP: 1.5” / FIX.

11. DRAIN: 1.5” / WASTE-MIN.: 1.5” / VENT – MIN.: 1.5”

8. Section 31 32 23/3.2/B/3. The language in ASTM D1194 – 94/6 (standard test method for Bearing Capacity of Soil) states that “the precision and bias of this test method for determining the bearing capacity of soil in place by means of a field loading test has not been determined” and “the variability of the soil and resulting disturbance of the soil under the loading plate do not allow for the repetitive duplication of test results required to obtain a meaningful statistical evaluation”. This is a risk to the urethane contractor as variability in the test results (based upon soil variability and disturbance) could result in failing tests and inability to complete work. Could the bearing plate load test be a separate contract? Then, if the test proves successful, an injection design be completed from that information on a second contract? Please advise.

Response: Bearing plate tests in accordance with ASTM 1194 and the urethane injection work are performed under a single contract.
