About this file

This document is Attachment B: Salient Characteristics for a federal procurement (36C24826Q0530) outlining specifications for a benchtop ductless filtered chemical fume hood required by the Research Service at North Florida/South Georgia Veterans Health System. The hood must be fully self-contained, operating without external ducting or building exhaust connections, utilizing carbon filtration media capable of adsorbing solvent and acid vapors. The unit shall maintain a minimum average face velocity of approximately 60 feet per minute at a 16-inch sash opening with a bypass airflow design to stabilize velocity as the sash position changes. The nominal width is approximately 5 feet, configured as a benchtop laboratory fume hood with accommodation for multiple internal prefilters and exhaust fans.

The hood shall include factory-integrated monitoring and alarm systems continuously tracking filter breakthrough detection, laboratory air quality, sash position, internal temperature, and fan operation status, with audible and visual alarms for unsafe conditions and automatic fan shutdown at elevated temperatures. Construction requirements specify a chemical-resistant interior liner, powder-coated steel exterior, tempered safety glass vertical-rising sash with a stop at approximately 16-inch operating height, and aerodynamic airfoil design. Additional features include integrated vapor-proof LED lighting with illumination suitable for bench-top work, sound levels not exceeding approximately 60 dB(A), accessible service panels for maintenance, and a digital command/control module supporting real-time operational monitoring and communication capability. The unit requires 115V, 50/60 Hz electrical power with a factory-installed power cord and plug. The hood must meet or be tested to ANSI Z9.5, SEFA 9, Modified ASHRAE 110, UL 61010-1, and ASTM E84 standards, with internationally recognized equivalent standards accepted. The vendor is responsible for delivery, uncrating, set-in place, and removal of all shipping and installation-related debris.

Salient Characteristics - Ductless Filtered Fume Hood

Research Service at North Florida/South Georgia Veterans Health System requires a benchtop ductless filtered chemical fume hood designed for laboratory research applications that safely contains and filters chemical vapors without connection to a building exhaust system. The hood shall provide validated airflow containment, integrated safety monitoring, and compliance with applicable laboratory safety standards. Minimum salient characteristics are provided here.

Ductless Filtered Design

• Shall be a fully self-contained ductless filtered fume hood designed to operate without external ducting or connection to building exhaust systems.

• Shall utilize carbon filtration media capable of adsorbing solvent and acid vapors suitable for laboratory chemical handling.

• Shall include integral exhaust blowers sized to maintain a minimum average face velocity of approximately 60 feet per minute at a 16-inch sash opening.

• Shall incorporate a bypass airflow design to stabilize face velocity as sash position changes.

Integrated Safety Monitoring and Alarms The hood shall include a factory-integrated monitoring and alarm system that continuously monitors operational safety conditions. The system shall include monitoring capability for filter breakthrough detection for solvent and acid vapors, laboratory air quality, sash position, internal temperature, and fan operation status.

The system shall provide:

• Audible and visual alarms for unsafe conditions including filter breakthrough, fan failure, excessive sash opening, and over-temperature conditions.

• Automatic safety response including fan shutdown at elevated temperatures

Construction and Materials The hood shall include construction features appropriate for laboratory chemical handling:

• Chemical-resistant interior liner, such as fiberglass-reinforced composite panels.

• Powder-coated steel exterior suitable for laboratory environments.

• Tempered safety glass vertical-rising sash with defined operating height and loading position.

• Sash stop at approximately 16-inch operating height, with ability to open higher for loading operations.

• Aerodynamic airfoil design at the hood opening to improve airflow containment.

Lighting and Usability The hood shall provide features supporting routine laboratory work:

• Integrated vapor-proof LED lighting suitable for laboratory use.

• Illumination levels sufficient for bench-top laboratory work.

36C24826Q0530 Attachment B: Salient Characteristics

• Sound levels during operation not exceeding approximately 60 dB(A) at the operating sash position.

• Accessible service panels for maintenance of electrical or plumbing components.

Smart Control and Communication The hood shall include a digital command/control module capable of monitoring hood status and communicating system information.

The control system shall support:

• Real-time operational monitoring

• User interface for fan and lighting controls

• Communication capability for monitoring or service diagnostics.

Size and Configuration

• Nominal width: approximately 5 feet

• Configuration: benchtop laboratory fume hood.

• Shall accommodate multiple internal prefilters and exhaust fans appropriate to the hood width to maintain airflow performance.

Safety and Performance Standards The hood shall meet or be tested to recognized laboratory safety and performance standards, including:

• ANSI Z9.5 Laboratory Ventilation Standard

• SEFA 9 Laboratory Fume Hood Standard

• Modified ASHRAE 110 containment testing

• UL 61010-1 electrical safety standard

• ASTM E84 flame spread testing Equivalent internationally recognized standards demonstrating comparable performance may be accepted.

Electrical Requirements

• Electrical requirement: 115V, 50/60 Hz power supply.

• Shall include factory-installed power cord and plug.

Delivery/Installation Requirements Vendor shall be responsible for the delivery, uncrating, set-in place and removal of all shipping/installation related debris.
