B.3 PERFORMANCE WORK STATEMENT (PWS)

1. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

1.1. The Government requires Industrial and Domestic Water Testing and Chemical Treatment Services in support of the Engineering service at the Bruce W. Carter Medical Center Miami VA Healthcare System located at 1201 NW 16th Street Miami, FL and the William Kling, Outpatient Clinic, located at 9800 W. Commercial Blvd. Sunrise, Florida 33351.

1.2. The Dental unit water lines (DUWLs) consist of small-bore plastic tubing that delivers water used for general, non-surgical irrigation and as a coolant to dental hand pieces, sonic and ultrasonic scalers, and air-water syringes. Municipal tap water is the water source for these lines. Guidelines for infection control in dental healthcare settings recommends that standards also exist for safe drinking water quality as established by Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the American Public Health Association (APHA), and the American Water Works Association (AWWA); they have set limits for heterotrophic bacteria of <500 CFU/ml of drinking water (341, 342). Thus, the number of bacteria in water used as a coolant/irrigate for nonsurgical dental procedures should be as low as reasonably achievable and, at a minimum, <500 CFU/ml, the regulatory standard for safe drinking water established by EPA and APHA/AWWA.
