About this file

This is a Joint Commission inspection report documenting a semi-annual inspection of automatic kitchen hood fire extinguishing systems at VA Medical Center, located at 1826 Veterans Blvd, Dublin, GA 31021. The inspection was conducted on October 8, 2025, by inspector David Mills (License 4205XHP) from Johnson Controls North America, the service provider. The inspection is identified as Work Order #59851798 and covers Element of Performance EP-13 under Joint Commission Standard EC.02.03.05, which requires testing of all automatic fire extinguishing systems for kitchen hoods every six months in accordance with NFPA 96-2011: 11.2.

The inspection covered six kitchen hood systems and ten kitchen hood appliances across multiple kitchen locations: Building 85, Cafe back, Cafe front, Main kitchen back hood, Main kitchen front hood, and Main kitchen serving line. All 16 devices inspected (100%) passed with no deficiencies identified and no retired devices. All systems achieved full compliance with maintenance requirements including fusible link replacement, detection system testing, remote manual pull station testing, electric switch operation, nozzle cleaning, vacuum testing, and air or nitrogen purging. System manufacturers include Ansul (multiple models ranging from 1.5 to 6 gallons), with electric shunt trip fuel shut-off mechanisms. The systems protect various cooking appliances including ranges, fryers, griddles, tilt skillets, and ovens. Notable items marked "No" or "Not Answered" include personnel instruction in manual system operation and Class K extinguisher presence at certain locations. The report includes detailed maintenance item results for each system and concludes with inspector signature certification on 10/08/2025.

Elements of Performance #13

Every 6 months the facility tests all automatic fire extinguishing systems for the Kitchen Hoods. The completion date of the tests is documented.

Note: Discharge of the fire-extinguishing system is not required.

Automatic Kitchen Hood Systems

For additional guidance on performing the tests, see NFPA 96-2011: 11.2

Test Method

An inspection and servicing of the fire-extinguishing system and listed exhaust hoods containing a constant or fire-actuated water system shall be made at least every 6 months by properly trained and qualified persons.

All actuation components, including remote manual pull stations, mechanical or electrical devices, detectors, actuators, and fire-actuated dampers, shall be checked for proper operation during the inspection in accordance with the manufacturer's listed procedures.

Fusible links (including fusible links on fire damper assemblies) and automatic sprinkler heads shall be replaced at least annually or more frequently if necessary where required by the manufacturer.

Other detection devices not including fusible links and automatic sprinklers shall be serviced or replaced in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations.

Where automatic bulb-type sprinklers or spray nozzles are used and annual examination shows no buildup of grease or other material on the sprinkler or spray nozzles, annual replacement shall not be required.
