About this file

This is a Salient Characteristics document specifying technical requirements for a Dynamic Devices LYNX Automated Liquid Handling Workstation intended to replace an obsolete Tecan EVO 150 DNA normalizer at VA Boston Healthcare System. The system must be a high-throughput, plate-based automated liquid handler capable of simultaneous DNA normalization across 96 wells with real-time volume verification. The core requirement is proprietary Volume Verified Pipetting (VVP) technology providing real-time, per-channel volume verification across a full 96-channel head, enabling true simultaneous normalization of 96 DNA samples in a single pass with individualized per-well volume handling. The system must include a secondary 4-channel f4iZ pipetting arm with independent z-axis actuation, a gripper tool with barcode imager capability for 1D and 2D codes, and an integrated labware elevator supporting up to 40 plates.

The hardware specification calls for a 1.2-meter automated workstation (LM1200 chassis) with full linear motion control supporting 42 SBS deck positions, a 96-channel VVP pipetting head with 1.5–1,250 microliter capacity, and a PC workstation with Method Manager 4.x software for automation control. The system must support daily MVP production volumes with rapid plate processing (tens of seconds per plate) and integrate with existing CSV/LIMS plate maps without requiring total workflow redevelopment. Installation must include inside delivery, system assembly, configuration, and operational verification at the VA Boston laboratory, with mandatory on-site operator and superuser training on scripting, maintenance, and DNA normalization workflows. The vendor must provide a minimum one-year comprehensive OEM warranty covering parts and labor, with technical support available within 24 hours of issue reporting. The document identifies VVP technology as proprietary to Dynamic Devices, with no alternative systems providing real-time per-channel volume verification or true 96-sample simultaneous normalization capability.

Salient Characteristics - Dynamic Devices LYNX Automated Liquid Handler Workstation

1. General Requirements The system must be a high-throughput automated liquid handling workstation designed for plate-based genomic workflows, capable of simultaneous DNA normalization across 96 wells with real‑time volume verification. It must replace the obsolete Tecan EVO 150 DNA normalizer while maintaining continuity of MVP operations.

2. Core Functional Requirements

· Volume Verified Pipetting (VVP) Technology:

Must include proprietary VVP capability providing real‑time, per‑channel volume verification for all pipetting actions across a full 96‑channel head.

· True 96‑Channel Simultaneous Pipetting:

System must normalize 96 DNA samples in a single pass, with individualized per‑well volume handling.

· Independent Channel Control:

The 96‑channel VVP head must provide fully independent control of each channel’s dispense/aspirate volume.

· Secondary Pipetting Tool (4‑channel f4iZ):

Must include an f4iZ pipetting arm with independent z‑axis actuation for accessing individual wells and handling variable tip sizes.

· Accuracy & Precision:

System must meet predefined accuracy and precision criteria for genomic DNA normalization, supported through OEM validation and real‑time volume verification.

3. Hardware Requirements

· Workstation Chassis:

1.2 m automated liquid handling workstation with full linear motion control, supporting 42 SBS deck positions.

· 96‑Channel VVP Pipetting Head:

Capable of 1.5–1,250 µL pipetting range.

· 4‑Channel f4iZ Pipetting Tool:

Includes independent z‑axis control and 18 mm fixed Y‑spacing.

· Gripper Tool with Independent z‑Axis:

Required for plate movement and barcode imaging.

· Integrated Barcode Imager:

Capable of reading both 1D and 2D codes mounted on the gripper head for variable‑height labware.

· Deck Accessories:

Must support tip racks, carriers, and optional labware elevator (up to 40 plates or 10 tip boxes).

· Custom Deck Cutout:

Required to integrate the elevator system with the Lynx deck.

4. Software Requirements

· Method Manager 4.x:

OEM automation control software must be provided and support:

· Importing normalization worklists

· VVP settings per plate

· Custom scripting for DNA concentration targeting

· PC Workstation:

Must include OEM‑provided Windows PC, monitor, keyboard, and mouse.

5. Performance & Validation Requirements

· DNA Normalization:

Must generate validated, assay‑ready DNA normalization plates using OEM‑supported method development.

· Throughput:

Must support daily MVP production volumes with rapid plate processing (tens of seconds per plate).

· Validation Support:

OEM must supply on-site method development, accuracy/precision validation, and report documentation.

6. Installation, Training, and Support Requirements

· Installation:

Inside delivery, system assembly, configuration, and operational verification at VA Boston laboratory.

· Training:

On‑site operator and super‑user training on scripting, maintenance, troubleshooting, and DNA normalization workflows.

· Warranty:

Minimum one‑year comprehensive OEM warranty (parts, labor, travel).

· Support Response Time:

OEM must provide technical support within 24 hours of issue reporting.

7. Compatibility Requirements

· Space Constraints:

Compact footprint suitable for VA Boston Biorepository laboratory integration.

· Workflow Continuity:

Must integrate with existing CSV/LIMS plate maps and concentration targets without requiring total workflow redevelopment.

· Avoidance of Substantial Duplication of Cost:

No alternative systems may require extensive revalidation or slow throughput (per market research).

8. Safety, Compliance, and Security Requirements

· OEM and installation must comply with all federal, state, and local regulations and VA facility standards.

· No VA sensitive information is processed; A&A requirements do not apply.

· Vendor personnel must be badged and escorted onsite.

· Must adhere to VA records‑management rules for deliverables.

9. Proprietary & Sole Source Characteristics Based on VA market research:

· VVP technology is proprietary to Dynamic Devices.

· No other system provides real‑time, per‑channel volume verification or true 96‑sample simultaneous normalization.

· Alternatives (Tecan Fluent, Beckman Biomek i7) rely on slower 8‑channel pipetting and lack verification capability.

10. Required Components (per OEM Quote)

· LM1200 Workstation Chassis

· LM1200 Automation Table

· 96‑Channel VVP Pipetting Tool

· f4iZ 4‑Channel Pipetting Tool

· Gripper Tool + Barcode Imager

· PC Workstation + Method Manager 4.x

· Application Development Support

· Installation & Inside Delivery
