STATEMENT OF WORK

WEST HAVEN BOILER PLANT

DEAREATOR TANK REPAIRS

VA CONNECTICUT HEALTHCARE SYSTEM (VACHS)

VA MEDICAL CENTER WEST HAVEN

950 CAMPBELL AVENUE

WEST HAVEN, CT 06516

BACKGROUND

VA Connecticut Healthcare System completed a required inspection of the Boiler Plant Deaerator Tank serving the steam distribution system to determine the state of any cracks, corrosion, cleaning, and maintenance. A Deaerator Tank is a critical component in steam-generating systems, particularly in a power plant. Its main function is to remove dissolved gasses, primarily oxygen and carbon dioxide, from the boiler feedwater to prevent corrosion and improve efficiency.

JUSTIFICATION

An internal and external visual inspection of the West Haven Boiler Plant Deaerator Tank was conducted. An inspection report dated April 04, 2025 was received with deficiencies identified. An effectively operating Deaerator Tank is a critical component of a Steam Boiler’s Operation. A properly and safely operating Deaerator promotes extended life to the boiler, reduces maintenance costs, and improves the overall efficiency of the steam-generation process. It is required to remove dissolved gasses while heating the feedwater to saturation temperature to reduces the solubility of gases like oxygen and carbon dioxide, causing them to separate from the water. It collects gasses that rise to the surface where they can be vented to the atmosphere and stores and conditions the treated feedwater as it preheats the water for the boiler and in turn improves the overall efficiency of the steam cycle by reducing the thermal shock to the boiler. It protects against corrosion by removing oxygen and dioxide that will otherwise cause significant corrosion to the boiler and steam system components. Facilities Management Service Staff are not qualified to perform repairs to the tank.
