Newington 2C Ductwork Corrections 689A4-24-200 Newington Campus
STATEMENT OF WORK
Project Number: 689A4-24-200
NEWINGTON 2C DUCTWORK CORRECTIONS
VA Connecticut Healthcare System (VACHS) – Newington Campus
555 Willard Avenue Newington, CT 06111
BACKGROUND INFORMATION. There is a stretch of return air ductwork in Newington that is corroded and needs to be replaced. This duct is in a crawl space off a mechanical room. The duct serves an AHU C01 that serves Building 2C. From what I could see access will probably be the most challenging part of this job. The corrosion is apparently caused by water & salt entering the crawl space from above (sidewalk entrance to building 2W). See the attached photos. The VA requires the ductwork and insulation to be replaced in kind.
I. GENERAL SCOPE OF WORK
The contractor shall provide all necessary to demolish, dispose of, install and insulate the section of identified return air ductwork accessed via room 2W- B02 on the Newington Campus, 555 Willard Avenue, Newington, CT 06111.
II. STATEMENT OF PROJECT OBJECTIVES
The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) intends to have the contractor thoroughly survey, investigate, and document how the work will be accomplished. All work to be completed in compliance with relevant specification set forth in the VA TIL library. To access the VA documents please use the following link: http://www.cfm.va.gov/til/.
Note: It is the opinion of the writer that the easiest way to replace the duct would be to disconnect one end in the confined space and the second end in the chiller plant. Then pull out the entire section. Next fabricate the ductwork in the chiller plant and push it into the confined space.
1. Seal Sidewalk above ductwork (quote 25 ft), this area further referred to as top of tunnel.
2. The joint between 2W and the sidewalk shall be cleaned of debris, install backer rod and fill the joint with Non-Sag, Polyurethane concrete and masonry sealant. The sleeve at the post indicator valve shall be cleaned of debris, backer rod installed and fill the joint with Non-Sag, Polyurethane concrete, and masonry sealant (or approved equal).
3. Install gutter and down spout to divert water away from wall and sidewalk joint.
4. Demolish / Replace (quote 18 feet of ductwork) ductwork. Remove and replace the damaged section of the return air ductwork ~72’’ wide up to the far end of the 90-degree bend.
5. Demolish / Replace insulation (quote 18 feet of insulation to insulate) on new ductwork. After ductwork is reassembled and sealed with duct sealant on all joints, it will be properly insulated, wrapped, and labeled (comply with ASHRAE and relevant VA standards).
6. Install sheet metal cover over newly installed and insulated ductwork to divert water away from ductwork into confined space.
7. Make service openings (access hatches) to facilitate the work. For standardized quoting purposes quote Installing 4 access hatches in ductwork down stream of new ductwork.
8. Clean all downstream ductwork up to and including input blower to AHU C01 up to and including the air fan clean reheat coils.
9. Seal and insulate all access hatches.
10. All duct, HVAC work shall be performed by NADCA certified Air Systems Cleaning Specialists, with current certifications filed with designated VA representative.
III. JUSTIFICATION
This project will correct rusted ductwork, which damages air quality. It will replace in kind (but new condition) ductwork and insulation to VA standards documented in the TIL.
