BACKGROUND: The Medgar and Myrlie Evers Home National Monument sits at 2332 Margaret Walker Alexander Street (formerly Guynes Street) in Jackson, Mississippi. It is significant at the local, state, and national level for its association with Medgar Wiley Evers and Myrlie Beasley Evers, who made major contributions to advancing the goals of the civil rights movement. It is also significant as the site of Medgar Evers’s assassination on June 12, 1963. A white supremacist shot and killed Medgar Evers in the carport of his home.
