About this file
This document contains test pit logs from geotechnical explorations conducted for the Navajo Gallup Water Supply Project, specifically for San Juan Lateral Turnout Buildings at multiple locations. The exploration was performed using a Deere 310G Backhoe by C. Beyer in July and August 2025 at twelve test pit locations: Sonostee Turnout (2 pits), Newcomb Turnout (2 pits), Naschitti Turnout (2 pits), BBN9 Turnout (1 pit), Coyote Canyon Turnout (2 pits), Rock Springs Turnout (1 pit), and Window Rock Turnout (2 pits). Test pit depths ranged from 8.5 to 12 feet, with ground elevations between 5,564.7 and 6,852.9 feet.
The subsurface materials encountered consisted primarily of Quaternary Alluvium deposits classified as backfill or fill materials, predominantly composed of clayey sand, silty sand, and poorly graded sand with varying fines content (5-65%) and compaction levels (73.8-88.6%). Depths to water were recorded as not encountered (NE) on the dates excavated. Key laboratory test results from selected test pits included in-place dry densities ranging from 84.1 to 99.4 pcf, maximum dry densities from 107.6 to 117.0 pcf, optimum water contents from 10.8 to 17.2%, and liquid limits ranging from non-plastic to 34.4%. Several test pits encountered Cretaceous Menefee Formation sandstone bedrock at depths of 5.5 to 10.0 feet, which was soft to moderately soft and intensely to moderately-intensely weathered. Corrosivity samples were collected at depths ranging from 4.0 to 4.5 feet. Excavations were discontinued due to difficult conditions in bedrock or equipment limitations.
