BACKGROUND

Augusta, Georgia (herein “Augusta”, “City”) is governed by a ten-member Board of Commissioners and a Mayor. The Board of Commissioners appoints the Administrator. To implement the Commission’s directives, the Administrator uses a management team consisting of members of their immediate staff and 15 department directors.

The 15 departments that report to the Commission through the Administrator are Animal Services, Central Services, E-911, Engineering & Environmental Services, Finance, Fire, Housing & Community Development, Human Resources, Information Technology, Planning & Development, Procurement, Recreation & Parks, Richmond County Correctional Institution, Transit, and Utilities.

Each department director is charged with managing departmental operations in a manner which stresses efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and customer service.

In addition to the internal departments that report through the Administrator, certain services are provided to residents through constitutional officers and independently elected or appointed officials. These external offices are created by the Georgia Constitution or through state law.

Augusta provides many complex and valuable services to its expanding and diverse population. These include public safety, roads, recreation, water, sewer, courts, and more.

While more residents may mean a larger tax base, as Augusta’s population continues to grow and diversify, demand increases for both core services and new services.

With the adoption of the 2026 Budget, the city has an estimated 2,700 authorized positions.

For more information, the City’s 2026 Budget document is available at the following address:
