About this file
This is a project description and specification document from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources for bridge deck replacement work at the Volga River Recreation Area in Fayette County. The project involves removing and replacing the existing guard rail, bridge deck, and bridge beam nailers on the Frog Hollow Bridge, a pedestrian trail structure located at coordinates 4253'23.5"N 9146'28.4"W. Work scope includes installation of approximately 114 linear feet of 2x pressure-treated wood nailers using Techfast timber-to-steel fasteners, approximately 532 square feet of 3x12 pressure-treated timber decking, and guard rail installation with 4x4 posts spaced at maximum 6-foot intervals, 60 inches in height above the bridge deck, with mid rails and top rail featuring 2x6 cap. The project is organized into five line items: mobilization, demolition, bridge beam nailers, bridge deck, and guard rail, all listed as lump sum bids. Contractors are required to conduct a mandatory site visit and inspection prior to bidding to familiarize themselves with actual job conditions and verify all dimensions and site conditions shown on plans.
Work restrictions include no activity from noon Friday through Monday morning and no work on holidays without explicit approval from the Iowa DNR Engineer or Park Manager. The trail will remain closed during construction, with DNR staff responsible for signage. Contractors must provide their own disposal sites for excess excavated material or broken concrete and are prohibited from disturbing grass areas or trees outside construction limits or using surrounding areas for parking, vehicle servicing, or material storage without approval. Access to the bridge is limited to skid loaders and UTVs using the Frog Hollow pedestrian trail. Contractors must notify the DNR Engineer of any utilities or fixtures encountered and any discrepancies or conflicts identified in plans prior to commencing work. For site verification and specific location details, contractors should contact Volga River Park Manager Austin Lette at austin.lette@dnr.iowa.gov or 515.975.8819.
