In cases where it is not practical to maintain a ten-foot separation, the Division of Water Supply may allow deviation on a case-by-case basis, if supported by data from the design Engineer. Such considerations may include the type of pipe, concrete or steel encasement or a change in the joint location. Such deviation may allow installation of the water closer to a sewer main, provided the water main is in a separate trench.
MEASUREMENT OF PIPE AND PAYMENTS - All pipe shall be measured along top of pipe in place from center of fittings and will be paid for as linear feet of pipe in place including trenching, backfill, unloading, hauling, and all work incidental to the installation at the unit price bid. The amount of open ditch shall be as small as practical for efficient operation.
BACKFILLING - After the pipe work has been approved, the earth shall be thoroughly tamped into bell holes under and around the pipe until 6" of dirt covers over top of pipe. The remainder of the backfill may then be placed by an approved method, which will not injure or disturb the pipe. After settlement occurs, trenches shall be refilled and smoothed until all trench backfill permanently conforms to the original surface of the ground or meet the approval of the Engineer.
The cost of all work of backfilling shall be included in the contract price bid for pipe.
TESTING AND STERILIZING - All water lines shall be tested to a pressure of 120 pounds per square inch. The leakage shall be measured by pumping into the line with a pump capable of maintaining the required pressure and measuring the amount of water necessary to sustain the pressure for a period of two hours and may be done either before or after backfilling. The allowable leakage in gallons should be less than the pipe diameter in inches x 0.00154x length of the pipe in feet under a pressure test of at least 150 pounds per square inch. Should the leakage exceed that specified, the leaks shall be located and repaired and the lines retested until it fulfills that above requirements. All water line shall be sterilized with chlorine before being placed into service. Either liquid chlorine or HTH may be used in such amount as to provide a dosage of not less than 50 ppm. The sterilizing agent may be introduced in any manner approved by the Engineer that will insure a uniform distribution.
Following a contact period or not less that 24 hours, chlorinated water shall be flushed from the line and the contractor shall arrange for at least one microbiological sample to be collected by a representative of the Mississippi State Department of Health or a Registered Professional Engineer in charge of the project, or a Certified Operator for the system from every dead end line and every major looped line.
