About this file

This document is a detailed specification sheet for a calcium quadrupole laser requisition by the Ion Storage Group. The specifications require a continuous wave (CW), tunable laser with a precise wavelength range of 729.3 nm +/- 0.1 nm, featuring an instantaneous linewidth < 10 kHz and a mode-hop free tuning range > 5 GHz. Key technical requirements include a laser diode with >60 dB isolator, an amplifier capable of >350 mW output, monitor photodiodes, Gaussian laser output with >50% fiber coupling efficiency, and a mechanically robust housing with frequency stability <100 MHz/K.

Additional critical specifications encompass laser driving electronics with low noise and high resolution, temperature and pressure compensation, fast modulation capabilities for phase locking with >1 MHz bandwidth, in-house laser diode replacement, and low-noise locking electronics for phase locking to a reference laser. The document also mandates a Pound-Drever-Hall actuation module with MHz-range modulation and demodulation, and includes requirements for temperature, current, EOM, and PZT control with rack-mountable driving electronics.

Detailed specifications for the Ion Storage Group calcium quadrupole laser requisition

1. Laser needs to be CW, tunable, and include the wavelength range 729.3 nm +/- 0.1 nm with an instantaneous linewidth < 10 kHz and a mode-hop free tuning range > 5 GHz throughout this wavelength range.

2. Laser diode and >60 dB isolator included, linear polarization of 1:100.

3. Amplifier after the laser head to achieve a power output > 350 mW. If amplifier is a standalone system, fiber coupling is required between laser head and amplifier.

4. Monitor photodiodes for seed laser power and amplifier output power.

5. Gaussian laser output that allows fiber coupling efficiences > 50% without external user-added ellipticity-shaping optics.

6. Mechanically robust and stable housing to improve acoustic, temperature, and alignment stability. Frequency stability < 100 MHz/K, minimal pointing drift when tuning the laser. Rigid mounting to an optical breadboard possible.

7. Laser driving electronics with low noise and drift and high resolution that control the laser temperature, current, EOM, and PZT. Temperature stabilization and pressure compensation included. Driving electronics should be rack-mountable.

8. Fast modulation possible for laser phase locking with a feedback bandwidth > 1 MHz;

demonstrated laser locking at this bandwidth with a robust lock that holds over multiple days.

9. Replacement of laser diode can happen in-house.

10. Low-noise locking electronics to phase lock the 729 laser to a reference laser with > 1 MHz bandwidth. Locking electronics need to include a PID regulator with multiple I and D stages, and contain separate outputs for fast actuation and drift compensation.

11. Module for Pound-Drever-Hall actuation that includes modulation and demodulation of a EOM in the MHz frequency range with adjustable phase.
