SECTION 15010 - GENERAL PROVISIONS

1.01. GENERAL:

A. DIVISION 1 REQUIREMENTS:

This section includes all provisions of the General Requirements, Division 15. Mechanical plans, electrical plans, general plans, and all associated specifications are part of this specification.

B. DRAWINGS:

The mechanical drawings show the general arrangement of all piping, equipment, and appurtenances and are to be followed as closely as actual building construction, site conditions, and the work of other trades will permit. Conform the mechanical work to the requirements shown on all of the drawings. General and structural drawings take precedence over mechanical drawings. Notes on plans take precedence over specification requirements. Because of the small scale of the mechanical drawings, it is not possible to indicate all offsets, fittings and accessories which may be required. Investigate the structural and finish conditions affecting the work and arrange the work accordingly.

C. COMMUNICATION:

1. PROJECT MEETINGS:

Coordinating, clarification, and intent of design and construction communication at project meetings with all concerned parties is permitted and recommended. Official meeting notes will be taken by a designated person and a footnote attached to all distribution of meeting notes to provide any participant an opportunity to disagree officially (within a set period of time) with the accuracy of items discussed.

2. MAIL or HAND DELIVERY:

Request for Information (RFI) is permitted by mail or hand delivery provided:

a. Communication to be forwarded through IHS or copy to IHS. Response will be forwarded through IHS.

b. Include possible options, solutions, drawings as necessary and/or conclusions.

RFI's received without Contractor's opinion of solutions or conclusions will not be accepted at IHS's discretion.

c. Submit timely requests. IHS will respond with appropriate consideration for scheduling of construction activities as communicated by the Contractor.

Time or response deadlines included with requests or otherwise imposed will be disregarded at the discretion of the IHS.

d. Response to RFI will NOT be construed as requirement or permission for adjustment of contract sum. Adjustment of contract sum is a function of the "Change Order" process as outlined in Section 1.

e. RFI's received without consultation with appropriate subcontractor or material supplier will not be accepted at IHS's discretion.

15010 - 2 GENERAL PROVISIONS 15010 - 2

3. TELEPHONE CONVERSATION:

Request for Information is permitted with the understanding that telephone conversations are considered as preliminary and unofficial.

4. COMMUNICATION by FACSIMILE or EMAIL:

Request for Information is permitted using facsimile communication or email communication with return receipt.

5. VERBAL COMMUNICATION at JOBSITE:

Information given or opinioned by IHS at jobsite is considered preliminary with no official status. The IHS's Field Report will include all official communication from jobsite visitations.

B. SUBMITTALS:

1. Submit product data according to Section 15010.

2. Submit letter of contractor qualification conformance.

C. CONTRACTOR QUALIFICATIONS:

1. The loop contractor must have a certified installer (technician) trained by IGSHPA and an IGSHPA certified manufacturer's training program.

2. Ground heat exchanger fabricator must have completed a heat fusion school in which each participant has performed a heat fusion procedure under direct supervision of a IGSHPA Association Certified Heat Fusion Technician or Dot certified heat fusion technician.

3. Certified technicians must attend a retraining school annually. A single failure of a fusion joint will void the certification, and the technician must be retested to demonstrate satisfactory performance.

4. Local and State laws and ordinances as they pertain to buried pipe systems shall be strictly followed or a variance obtained.

A. POLYETHYLENE PIPE:

1. Manufacture pipe and fittings from a PE 3408 high density polyethylene compound with a cell classification of PE355434C or PE345434C as defined by ASTM D-3350.

Manufacture in accordance with ASTM D-3035, D-2447, or F-714 as applicable. The minimum dimensional ratio is 11 (SDR11).

2. Polyethylene is the only acceptable pipe material for the below surface portion of the ground heat exchanger.

A. PIPE JOINING METHODS:

1. Heat fusion process is the only acceptable method for joining pipe system. No other method is acceptable.

2. Butt is required for all pipe joining, socket fusion will be allowed only in approved circumstances (prior approval required). Follow the pipe manufacturer's recommended guidelines.

B. FLUSHING, PURGING, PRESSURE AND FLOW TESTING:

1. Pressure test vertical loops before installation.

15068 - 2 GEOTHERMAL HEAT EXCHANGE PIPING 15068 - 2

2. Flush pressure and flow test all horizontal components of the ground heat exchanger prior to backfilling.

3. Test heat exchangers hydrostatically at 150% of pipe design rating of 300% of the system operating pressure if this value is the smaller of the two.

4. No visible leaks shall occur within a 30 minute period.

5. Visibly check all fusion joints and loop lengths to verify that no leaks have occurred due to fusion joining or shipping damage.

6. Compare flow rates to calculated values to assure that there is no blockage or kinking of any pipe.

7. Maintain a minimum velocity of 2 ft./sec in each piping section for a minimum of 15 minutes to remove all air.

C. HORIZONTAL PIPE PLACEMENT AND BACKFILLING:

1. Prevent sharp bending of pipe around trench corners by using a shovel to round corners. Follow manufacturer's recommendations.

2. During backfilling procedure, prevent any sharp-edged rocks from coming into contact with the pipe by removing the rocks before backfilling, backfilling through a coarse screen for a 6 inch cover, or by covering with 6 inches of sand. Clods resulting from use of a backhoe must be broken up so air pockets formed around the pipe will not reduce heat conduction between the earth and the pipe. In some types of soils, wetting or flooding may be required.

3. Backfill horizontal return bends by hand to properly support the pipes and prevent kinking.

4. Separate supply and return lines or bundles a minimum of 12 inches to minimize thermal interference.

5. Minimum pipe depth below finished grade to be 4'-6".

6. Install tracer tape 18 inches below finished grade directly over horizontal piping and a 24" cross at upper ends of each well.

D. VERTICAL PIPING IN DRILLED WELLS:

1. Install piping after hole for well has been bored with drilling equipment.

2. Remove all cutout material remaining in well from drilling process before installing well piping.

3. Construct vertical well piping of two continuous lengths of piping with a U-bend.

Butt fusion joints are allowed at U- bend.

4. Provide fittings for pressure testing.

5. Pressure test assembly before insertion into well.

6. After insertion into well, fill piping with water until the water runs clear. The water in piping counteracts the buoyancy effect. Counterweights are allowed if deemed necessary.

7. Temporarily seal upper ends of well piping until connection with horizontal piping.

8. Pressure grout well hole with bentonite clay grout in accordance with IGSHPA installation manual. Monitor each well and continue adding grout where settlement has occurred.

9. Remove casing if casing was used in the drilling process. A casing will insulate the well and prevent heat transfer to the earth.

10. Connect vertical piping to horizontal piping using a long radius elbow; avoid tee fittings.

11. Pressure test entire underground system before backfilling trenches.

15068 - 3 GEOTHERMAL HEAT EXCHANGE PIPING 15068 - 3

E. PIPE PLACEMENT IN BUILDING:
