For paving and slabs on grade, at least one sample shall be obtained per supplier for each cumulative 50 cubic yards (38 cubic meters) of concrete poured.

For all other applications, the rate of sampling shall be specified in the Contract Documents. For large pours (50 yds. or greater) when the concrete will be exposed to the weather, one (1) volumetric measurement of entrained air content shall be preformed for each truckload of concrete. Contractor shall be responsible for the performing air tests. Samples with less than four (4%) entrained air shall be rejected.

During placement of the concrete, representative samples of fresh concrete shall be cast in six inch (6”) diameter by twelve inch (12”) tall cylinders according to ASTM C 31 in order to determine the quality and strength of the hydrated concrete. For other applications, the frequency of test samples required shall be one of the following; not less than three (3) samples for every fifty (50) yards (or fraction thereof) of placed concrete, not less than one (1) sample for each one thousand (1000) square feet of surface area placed (or fraction thereof), or as designated by the Company Representative.

At the discretion of the Company Representative, the Contractor may be directed to take additional test samples at no additional cost to the Company.

Test samples shall remain at the site exposed to the same conditions as the placed concrete for the first twenty-four (24) hours. Following the twenty-four (24) hours field cure period, the cylinders shall be immediately transported to a laboratory for controlled curing and testing. During periods of cold weather, the cylinders shall be transported in a temperature-controlled environmental (60- 80°F) or shall otherwise be insulated to protect against freezing.

MGED: OCEAN SPRAY PROJECT

No vehicular traffic, construction equipment, or materials shall be placed or permitted on foundations or floor slabs for at least three (3) days after placement and only if the concrete has achieved at least seventy-five percent (75%) of its specified twenty-eight (28) day compressive strength.

Prior to the end of the seven (7) day and/or fourteen (14) day cure period, the Company Representative may elect to qualify the concrete for loading based on testing cylinders to determine that the required concrete strength has been achieved. Upon approval by Company of alternative concrete mixture, Contractor may use high-early strength concrete. Contractor shall provide the Company adequate opportunity to place thermo-couples in completed formwork prior to placement of concrete.

The Company Representative and chief inspector will review concrete mixes, pours and curing times and work with the Contractor to minimize the curing time with Company design department approval. Each instance should be documented by the Contractor with a “request for information” (RFI).

If the Contractor elects to place equipment, materials, or traffic on concrete prior to the seven (7) day compressive test results, additional test cylinders shall be required to verify three (3) day compressive strength at no additional cost to the Company.

Strength of concrete shall be considered satisfactory if the average of two (2) twenty-eight (28) day tests in each set of cylinders equals or exceeds the specified twenty-eight (28) day strength and neither of the twenty-eight (28) day tests is five hundred (500) psi or more below the specified twenty-eight (28) day strength.
