About this file
This is a Request for Brand Name or Equal for a Capillary Electrophoresis (CE) Instrument, specifically an Agilent G7100A or equivalent system.
The Beverage Alcohol Laboratory (BAL), part of the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) Scientific Services Division located in Beltsville, Maryland, seeks to procure a CE instrument capable of analyzing approximately 1,200 alcoholic beverage samples annually. The primary application is determining organic acids (tartaric, malic, citric, succinic, acetic, lactic, gluconic, and fumaric acids) in wines, malt beverages, and distilled spirits for standard of identity determinations, product integrity investigations, and the Alcohol Beverage Sampling Program. The instrument must also support future expansion to analyze sugars (erythritol, fructose, glucose, sucrose, maltose, and lactose) for nutritional labeling assessment and cyanide detection.
The required system specifications include a real-time UV-Visible diode-array detector (190–600 nm wavelength range), programmable pressure system (-100 to +100 mbar), voltage capability of ±30 kV, 50-position autosampler carousel with temperature control (10–40°C), capillary cassette with temperature range of 10°C below ambient to 60°C, and Windows 11 graphical user interface. The winning proposal must provide line-item pricing for: CPU with monitor and printer, familiarization training at installation, on-site method consulting, an Organic Acids Kit, and the capability to add multiple detectors in the future. The system requires 100–240V power supply at 50–60 Hz with maximum 300W consumption.

Request for Brand Name or Equal Capillary Electrophoresis (CE) Instrument: Agilent G7100A, See below specifications.
The Beverage Alcohol Laboratory (BAL) located at 6000 Ammendale Road, Beltsville, Maryland, is part of the Scientific Services Division of TTB. The laboratory provides technical expertise and assistance to other divisions within TTB by analyzing approximately 1,200 alcoholic beverage samples (wine, malt beverages, and distilled spirits) in a year across a variety of programs.
TTB’s Beverage Alcohol Laboratory (BAL) is interested in purchasing a capillary electrophoresis (CE) instrument that would be capable of performing BAL’s previously developed test method for determining organic acids in alcoholic beverages. This would be used for determination of standard of identity for Formula submissions with lab analysis, Product Integrity investigations, and the Alcohol Beverage Sampling Program (ABSP). The instrument also allows BAL to possibly expand their capabilities to determine sugars (erythritol, fructose, glucose, sucrose, maltose, and lactose) used in nutritional labeling assessment, and cyanide in alcoholic beverages which is a limited ingredient.
Method Parameters
The instrument should be able to analyze, separate, and quantitate the following organic acids in alcoholic beverages such as wines, malt beverages, and distilled spirits:
Tartaric Acid Malic Acid Citric Acid Succinic Acid Acetic Acid Lactic Acid Gluconic Acid Fumaric Acid
Capillary Electrophoresis System Attachment 1: Salient Characteristics
Instrument Conditions include:
