About this file

This document is a Questions and Answers (Q&A) file addressing technical specifications for a microscope procurement related to banknote and security document materials analysis.

The Government seeks a microscope system for imaging and investigating current and potential materials used in banknotes and security documents. Sample types include paper, films, foils, and inks. The system must accommodate objects ranging from banknote size down to individual fibers and smaller, requiring a motorized stage with minimum 100 mm x 100 mm range of motion. The microscope must support primarily photographic documentation with potential video capability. Specific configuration requirements including objectives, epi-fluorescence, phase contrast capabilities, magnification levels, and measurement tools are detailed in Sections 3.1.2, 3.1.4, and 3.1.8 of the referenced Statement of Work. Working distance is not specified as a constraint, as the Government typically examines flat samples and can position them close to the optical surface as needed. The procurement requires integrated camera documentation capabilities and software-based measurement functionality as outlined in the complete Statement of Work document.

Text version

Question 1: Sample Type: What type of samples will be used (slides, Petri dishes, etc.)?

Response to Question 1: Paper, films, foils and inks

Question 2: Application: What is the intended application or purpose of the microscope?

Response to Question 2: Imaging and investigation of current and potential materials for use on banknotes or security documents.

Question 3: Will it require camera documentation (photos and/or videos)?

Response to Question 3: Yes, primarily pictures but potentially videos (See Sections 3.1.1 and 3.1.3 of the Statement of Work)

Question 4: What specific configuration is needed (objectives, epi-fluorescence, phase contrast, etc.)?

Response to Question 4: See Sections 3.1.2 and 3.1.4 of the Statement of Work

Question 5: What is the size of the object you want to inspect?

Response to Question 5: The Government will be looking at objects up to the size of banknotes and as small as individual fibers within the banknote if not smaller. The Government requires a stage with a range of motion range of at least 100 mm x 100 mm.

Question 6: What magnification is needed?

Response to Question 6: See section 3.1.4 of the Statement of Work

Question 7: What working distance is needed?

Response to Question 7: The Government does not specify working distance as it typically is dependent upon magnification. The Government usually looks at flat samples and can get close to the surface if necessary.

Question 8: Do you only need the microscope for viewing and capturing images, or do you also need measurement tools included in the software?

Response to Question 8: See Section 3.1.8. of the Statement of Work
