About this file

This is a Request for Information (RFI) issued by the U.S. Department of the Treasury's Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) seeking technologies for overt security features for future U.S. currency. The RFI aims to obtain, test, and evaluate novel visual authentication technologies that provide effective counterfeit deterrence against traditional printing, digital reproduction, and commercial material simulation. Proposed technologies should be unique, not currently in commercial use or public domain, and capable of being incorporated into banknotes as distinctive counterfeit deterrents.

Respondents are requested to submit preliminary samples and a brief technical description to Chris Dollberg at BEP by 2:00 PM Eastern Time on November 15, 2026. The submission should address technologies that can be easily authenticated by the public under most lighting conditions. The RFI emphasizes that this is for informational planning purposes only, does not guarantee a future procurement, and all response costs are solely at the respondent's expense. The Bureau may submit offered technologies to outside technical experts for evaluation, subject to the approval of the submitting party.

The U. S. Department of the Treasury, Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP), is interested in obtaining, testing, and evaluating technologies and/or materials with potential application as overt, visual authentication features for public usage on future generations of U. S. currency. Technologies offered should provide effective counterfeit deterrence against all types of threats including traditional printing, digital reproduction, as well as resisting simulation by commercially available materials.

Proposed counterfeit deterrent features should be novel and that are not otherwise in commercial use or the public domain. Therefore, the features may be eligible to become distinctive counterfeit deterrents incorporated into the banknote (inks, substrate) or applied to the note, and should not require the use of any external device for verification. An effective overt feature should be extremely difficult to simulate or duplicate but should be easy to authenticate by the public under most lighting conditions.

Technologies and/or materials submitted for consideration will be reviewed for inherent and relative effectiveness as a security feature and may be further assessed for compatibility with design and production factors, durability, environmental acceptability, and other processing requirements. For initial screening purposes, interested parties are requested to submit the following items to the BEP R&D technical lead, Chris Dollberg:

1. preliminary samples and

2. a brief technical description to:
