iii. Reflective Bands

B. CONTRACTOR: For this project, Contractor shall supply the following materials:

vi. Cap

C. All Additional Materials – Contractor shall furnish any other materials not specifically listed as County-supplied, but necessary to complete the Task Order.

3. STANDARD TECHNICAL STANDARDS

A. Pile Installation

i. Plastic or wood piles shall be at least 10” in diameter and meet standards for marine use for salt and brackish waters. Piles shall be strong enough to be driven to the highest level of resistance. Wood piles shall be wrapped with a high-density polyethylene wrap at a minimum thickness of 0.030” inch thickness. The wrap shall be shrink-wrapped and secured using 1-1/4" stainless steel ring-shank roofing nails every 2" along the seam. The wrap shall be installed before installing the piling into the water. The wrap should be installed so that it will be 1-foot above mean high water and to the bottom of pile so that it reaches below the mudline when embedded.

ii. Contractor shall drive all piles continuously without voluntary interruption. After installation, Contractor shall cut piles at the cutoff grade line and dispose of the surplus material. Any piles requiring excessive bending (greater than 3° to vertical) to frame properly shall be withdrawn and reinstalled to the proper batter. Piles shall not be installed and then pulled into position. Piles shall not be installed by excavating then backfilling and compacting. Minor adjustment (less than 3° to vertical) is allowed after pile installation; however, Contractor is fully responsible to ensure soil has settled around the pile so that no shifting will occur. Piles damaged, not located in the proper location, or installed out of alignment shall be withdrawn and replaced by new piles or shall be cut off at the mudline and additional piles installed as directed, all without additional cost to Sarasota County.

iii. Piles shall penetrate at least 10 feet in ground, or at least six (6) feet or more of rock. If rock is encountered, pre-drilling of the pile hole shall be required at no additional cost to Sarasota County. Blasting of holes for the piles is not permitted. If an auguring or punching method is deemed necessary to install a pile into rock or hard substrate, the method must first be approved by Sarasota County. If the pile is greater than 3° to vertical, then the pre-drill hole requires grouting. The materials and methodology for grouting must be pre-approved by Sarasota County. Piles shall not be connected or joined together to lengthen.

iv. Unless otherwise indicated in the Scope of Services, all installations include sign panel(s), cross members, isolator strip, pile cap(s), white reflective tape and 316 stainless steel hardware. Sign or pile assemblies not completed at the end of each workday must be marked and made visible to day and nighttime waterway traffic with at least one white reflective tape band. However, no more than two (2) pile assemblies (single or double) may be left unfinished at the end of each workday.

B. Caps: Pilings are to be capped with black caps with a minimum of 4, 1.5” 316 stainless steel screws. The cap shall fit the pile naturally without having to modify the pile cap in any fashion to forcefully fit the pile diameter (e.g. splitting a cap to fit a larger diameter pile than the cap was designed to fit).

C. Reflective Tape on Piles: Contractor shall inspect existing reflectives and remove and replace them if necessary. Contractor shall install new reflectives on all new pilings.

Contractor shall install two (2) 6” wide bands of 3M diamond grade white very high intensity prismatic reflective bands (3M™ Diamond Grade™ Linear Delineation System) or tape equivalent as provided and place them around each pile with a minimum of a 1” lap (the entire 6” width of the bands), with the first band installed 6” below the bottom of the sign and the second band 8” below the bottom of the first band. Bands shall be installed with a minimum of 4, 1.5” 316 stainless steel roofing shank nails. If the bands become delaminated prior to final construction inspections, they must be replaced. If any bands are applied to existing piles, the old tape/bands shall be completely removed, appropriately disposed of, and replaced with new reflectives. All new installations or sign replacements will require new piling reflectives to be installed unless otherwise stated in the Scope of Services.

D. Sign Installation

i. All sign panel installations must include cross member support and hardware as shown on the waterway marker standard drawings and diagrams. Cross members are to be pressure treated wood 2” x 4” or 4”x 4” lumber at the top of the sign and a 2”x 4” at bottom depending on the size sign. An isolator (a strip of thick plastic or ii.

rubber) must be placed between the wood and the aluminum signs. New piling installations or sign replacements on existing structures will require new cross members, isolator strip, and associated stainless steel hardware.

iii. A clearance of 6 feet from mean high-water line to the bottom edge of the lowest affixed sign is required. As needed sign(s) may be adjusted to meet project requirements. All changes must be approved by project manager.

iv. ATONs

a. Large Require 4”x 4” at top and 2”x 4” at bottom

b. Small Require 2”x 4” at top.

v. Regulatory Signs Require 4”x 4” at top and 2”x 4” at bottom

a. 3’x 4’ regulatory signs

vi. Regulatory Signs Require 4”x 4” and 4”x 2” at top and 4”x 4” at bottom

a. 4’x 6’ regulatory signs

b. 5’x 7’ regulatory signs

E. Hardware / Fasteners

i. All sign panels shall be drilled and fastened by full penetration of each pile/post by two (2) type 316 stainless steel (SS) through bolts or threaded rod, which must pass through each sign panel, the cross members and the pile/post and shall not extend more than 1” or less than ½” beyond type 316 stainless steel hex-lock nut, stainless steel lock washer, and stainless steel flat washers. A nylon shoulder washer will be used to eliminate any contact between the stainless steel fasteners and the aluminum sign panels to prevent or minimize bimetallic corrosion.

ii. The use of lag bolts is strictly prohibited unless explicitly authorized by the Project Manager and specifically outlined in the task order under defined project conditions.
