About this file

This document is a General Hydro-seeding Specification for Elbert County, Colorado, specifically for a complete gravel road rebuild on County Road 125, spanning from south of Highway 86 to north of Highway 24. The project requires hydroseeding for erosion control and roadside rehabilitation, with the hydroseeding process to be carried out progressively following each section's road construction completion. The contractor will be responsible for providing all necessary equipment, materials, management, and labor to prepare the seedbed, apply specified seed, fertilizer, and mulch evenly, and ensure immediate material application as directed by an Elbert County representative.

The specification details precise material requirements, including fertilizer application at 400 pounds per acre (with two fertilizer mix options), hydro-mulch application at 1,000 pounds per acre using cellulose or wood fiber-based material, and an organic, non-petroleum based tackifier applied at manufacturer's recommended rates. Equipment specifications mandate a truck or trailer-mounted hydraulic seeder and a tracked piece of equipment (preferably a crawler tractor) for seedbed preparation, with specific tracking instructions for different slope gradients. Payment will be compensated based on the contract unit price for General Hydroseeding, rounded to the nearest quarter-acre, and subject to approval by an Elbert County representative.

General Hydro-seeding Specification

Scope of Work:

Elbert County is undertaking a complete gravel road rebuild on CR 125, spanning from south of HWY 86 to north of HWY 24. As part of this project, hydroseeding is required for erosion control and to provide proper roadside rehabilitation. The hydroseeding process for this project will be carried out progressively, following the road construction crew's completion of each section.

The contractor shall provide all necessary equipment, materials, management, and labor to:

• Prepare the seedbed according to project specifications.

• Apply the specified seed, fertilizer, and mulch evenly.

• Ensure immediate application of materials following seedbed preparation, as directed by an Elbert County representative.

All work must adhere to the prescribed guidelines to support effective erosion control and proper roadside rehabilitation.

Materials & Specifications:

• Fertilizer: Apply 400 pounds per acre. Use either:

o 300 pounds of 18-46-0 (Diammonium Phosphate) and 100 pounds of 0-0-50

(Muriate of Potash), OR o 400 pounds per acre of 19-19-19 fertilizer.

• Hydro-Mulch: Must be cellulose or wood fiber-based and applied at a rate of 1,000 pounds per acre.

• Tackifier: Must be organic and non-petroleum based, applied at the manufacturer’s recommended rate per acre.

• Water: If using non-potable water, it must not be acidic.

• Seed: Must meet specified species and Pure Live Seed requirements per acre. Seed should be the last item placed into the tank and must not remain in the hydro-seeder for more than 4 hours. If a legume inoculant is required, it should be added along with the seed.

• Equipment:

o A truck or trailer-mounted hydraulic seeder with sufficient mixing capacity, pressure, and hose system to ensure even application of mulch, fertilizer, tackifier, and seed as directed by an Elbert County representative.

o A tracked piece of equipment, preferably a crawler tractor (bulldozer), shall be used to prepare the seedbed.

▪ Slopes steeper than 4:1 must be tracked perpendicular to the slope, with tracks overlapping slightly.

▪ Slopes less than 4:1 may be prepared using back-blading to ensure proper soil readiness for seeding.

▪ Seedbed preparation is incidental to hydroseeding unless specified as a separate bid item in the contract.

• Payment: Compensation will be based on the contract unit price for General Hydro-seeding, rounded to the nearest ¼ acre, upon approval and acceptance by an Elbert County representative.
