ADVANCED PLACEMENT – EUROPEAN HISTORY & WORLD HISTORY COMBINATION
August 10-14, 2009 – (Colby College, Waterville, ME)
The AP World History and AP European History courses provide rich interdisciplinary experiences for students, and prepare them for most college level humanities courses as well. Although the courses differ, there are many similarities, and teachers who teach either course are welcome. The workshop is designed to enable both new and experienced teachers to plan an effective and dynamic course. The workshop includes strategies to help students to learn the content and all aspects of the courses: politics, economics, social history, intellectual history, art history, and historiography. Participants can learn how to structure the syllabus to include appropriate activities and assessments, as well as content. An explanation of the AP test and scoring will include in-depth training of the Document Based Question and guidelines for the free response and multiple choice questions. Numerous handouts will supplement the explanation of teaching strategies, especially involving the critical thinking skills vital to the courses. Discussion is encouraged, and teachers should bring textbooks, relevant materials, books, films, and strategies to share. The participants will receive a CD of sample lessons and materials.
Instructor: Dr. Lenore Schneider, New Canaan High School, New Canaan, CT

ADVANCED PLACEMENT - SPANISH
August 10-14, 2009 – (Colby College, Waterville, ME)
This workshop will provide an in-depth look at the curriculum of an AP Spanish Language program. It will also address methodologies, the development of AP assignments and tests, grading criteria, and trouble-shooting specifically applicable to AP Spanish classes. New directions in AP curriculum, new testing procedures, and specific instructional techniques will be explained and discussed. Much of the classroom discussion will relate to how to set up an AP course or how to expand an existing one. Through simulated grading, participants will learn how AP essays and tapes are graded according to newly established criteria. There will be wide-ranging discussions of authentic, practical, realistic, and useful methods and materials geared to help prepare students for the exam. Participants are asked to bring the textbooks they are presently using as well as techniques and teaching aids they are willing to share with others.
Instructor: Patricia Smith- College Board Consultant
ADVANCED PLACEMENT - CALCULUS
August 10-14-, 2009 – (Colby College, Waterville, ME)
This session is designed for beginning (new) as well as experienced AP Calculus teachers and will focus on the three major themes in calculus: Limits, Derivatives, and Integration. Strategies and pedagogy to effectively present the calculus concepts covered under the AB curriculum will be discussed. Using numerous Free Response questions, we will discuss the scoring rubrics and how the exam is scored/read. We will also discuss in detail the AP Calculus Exam and how these calculus topics are “tested.” Over the course of this institute we will discuss:
1. Topics included in the AP curriculum (including slope fields)
2. Calculator usage.
3. Teaching styles/strategies
4. Various textbooks/publishers
5. Available resources for AP teachers
6. How to present various calculus concepts
7. The AP Exam format
8. Scoring the AP exam
Instructor: Brendan Murphy, John Bapst High School, Bangor, ME
ADVANCED PLACEMENT – STUDIO ART
August 10-14, 2009 – (Colby College, Waterville, ME)
In our week together we will review the criteria for creating a successful AP portfolio in each of the three categories: Drawing, Two-Dimensional Design, and Three-Dimensional Design. We will learn and practice the scoring rubric for each of the three sections of the portfolios (Quality, Concentration, Breadth). We will design and share lots of lesson plans and ideas for motivating students and keeping them on track, and practice different ways of critiquing. Best of all, we will engage in creating our own artistic “mini-concentration” on a theme of personal interest that can serve as a model for our students.
