About this file
This is a program announcement and application document issued by the Maine Department of Education for an Advanced Placement Chemistry Summer Institute hosted by Maine Maritime Academy in Castine, Maine. The institute is an intensive five-day program scheduled for July 13-17, 2009, designed to provide professional development for AP Chemistry teachers across the region. The curriculum focuses on acids and bases, covering weak and strong acids and bases, titration methods, equilibrium, buffers, and industrial applications. The program includes laboratory experiments, test question development, exam grading preparation, and training on College Board access and equity initiatives. Participants will earn 35 contact hours toward re-certification through Maine Maritime Academy. The registration deadline is July 1, 2009, with refunds permitted only with written notice prior to that date.
Pricing for the institute varies based on participant eligibility and accommodation preferences. Maine teachers from low-income eligible schools (40 percent or more low-income students) who are teaching an AP course in 2009-10 or 2010-11 are eligible for free attendance, though a $200 purchase order deposit is required to guarantee attendance and will only be charged for cancellations after July 1, 2009 or no-shows. Teachers from non-eligible Maine schools pay $550 for commuter status or $700 for boarder status. Out-of-state teachers pay $650 for commuter status or $800 for boarder status. Payments should be made to the Treasurer, State of Maine, and mailed to the Maine Department of Education, Attn: Nancy Lamontagne. Enrollment is limited, and registration is handled on a first-come, first-served basis.

ADVANCED PLACEMENT - CHEMISTRY
JULY 13-17, 2009 – (Maine Maritime Academy, Castine, ME) This summer, Maine will host an AP Chemistry Summer Institute on the shores of Penobscot Bay in Castine. The institute will provide an intensive five-day program that will focus on the topic of acids and bases. We will take an in-depth look at acids and bases covering such topics as weak and strong acids and bases, mechanisms of action, titrations, end points, equivalent points, indicators, equilibrium, buffers, industrial uses, etc. A significant portion of the schedule will be devoted to laboratory experiments, formulating test questions, exam grading, and preparing students for the exams. We will examine the College Board’s access and equity initiatives and the supporting resources available to AP teachers. Perhaps most importantly, the institute will provide a forum for the exchange of our ideas, teaching practices, and serve as a springboard for the development of a network of collaborating AP Chemistry teachers across the region. Participants will earn 35 contact hours towards re-certification through Maine Maritime Academy. Come to Castine for a week of chemistry and collegiality against the backdrop of scenic Penobscot Bay.
