About this file
These construction documents detail a temporary shoring and barricades project for Deck H and Deck J at Mott Community College in Flint, Michigan, prepared by Walker Consultants in October 2025. The project involves installing temporary structural support and safety barriers across six parking deck levels, with specific focus on addressing structurally deficient post-tensioned concrete beams and floor slabs. The work is limited to temporary shoring installation and does not involve changes to occupancy, use, or egress. The project will be completed in accordance with the 2021 International Building Code and NFPA 241 fire safety standards, with work limited to 7 am - 7 pm, Monday through Friday.
The project includes critical structural safety considerations, notably that the roof level (Levels 5 & 6) has reduced live load capacity of 30 psf, with strict barricading requirements to prevent overloading. The temporary shoring is based on engineering surveys conducted in October 2025, with an allowable soil bearing capacity of 1,500 psf. The documentation emphasizes that this is a temporary solution, with permanent repairs recommended and regular monitoring required. The contractor will be responsible for carefully installing steel post shores, maintaining precise spacing and load distribution, and exercising extreme caution to avoid damaging post-tensioned tendons during the work.

3. The Contractor shall perform Work in accordance with all applicable Federal, State, and Local Codes, Laws and Ordinances, The Contractor shall promptly notify the Engineer of any known nonconformity with the intent of the Construction Documents and as-built conditions to the applicable Codes, Laws or Ordinances and request clarification from the Engineer prior to proceeding with Work which is deemed in conflict with the applicable Codes, Laws or Ordinances.
4. The project shall be completed in accordance with the 2021 International Building Code.
5. Fire Safety during construction, alteration or demolition shall comply with the latest edition of NFPA 241.
6. Prior to preparing the bid and fabrication of any material or placement of concrete, field verify all existing dimensions and conditions shown on Drawings. Report all discrepancies to the Engineer immediately.
7. Do Not Scale Drawings.
8. Walker will not have control over or charge of and will not be responsible for construction means, methods, techniques, sequences or procedures, or for safety precautions and safety programs in connection with the project. Since these are the responsibility of others, Walker will not be responsible for the contractor's schedules or failure to carry out the project in accordance with Contract Documents. Walker will not have control over or charge of acts or omissions of the contractor, sub-contractors, or their agents or employees, or of other non-Walker persons performing portions of the project.
9. The presence of Walker or testing agency at the jobsite does not relieve contractor of the obligation to perform the work in accordance with the contract documents.
10. Shoring shall be installed snug tight and attached/anchored to prevent movement or loosening.
B. CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENTS
1. Construction Documents entitled “Mott Community College — Ramps H&J Shoring and Barricades” includes these Drawings and separately bound Specifications. For purposes of performing the work, Drawings and Specifications shall be a single unit.
2. The extent of repair areas shown on the drawings indicates Engineer’s estimates only. The estimated unit quantities included in the bid documents are based on Engineer’s estimated units for bid purposes only. The Contractor is responsible for determining the actual extent and locations of repair areas. The actual repair quantities shall be verified and agreed upon by the Engineer prior to commencing the repair Work.
3. Work shall be performed in coordination with construction observations by the Engineer to determine if the exposed existing construction is as assumed in the design.
4. Dimensions shown on plans are based on original construction documents.
5. Refer to Specifications for scope, description and requirements of Work.
C. DESIGN ASSUMPTIONS
1. The roof level (Levels 5 & 6) beams are assumed to be structurally deficient based on results of representative test openings. No live load allowed on roof level (Levels 5 & 6) until shoring installation is complete.
2. The allowable live load capacity of the roof level (Levels 5 & 6) is 30 psf based on results of test openings performed in September 2025. Staggered space closures are necessary to maintain this reduced live load. The barricading layout shown on R-103 accomplishes this. Roof level barricades shall be maintained at all times, either by Owner or Contractor, to prevent parking and overloading of slabs.
3. Allowable soil bearing capacity is 1,500 psf. Shoring loads at grade shall be adequately distributed so as not to exceed this limit.
4. Shoring design is based on conditions in the structure as of October, 2025 during the engineer's survey. If new deterioration conditions develop or existing deterioration becomes more severe, additional shoring shall be added.
5. This shoring is considered temporary. Permanent repairs are required and recommended. Regular monitoring and adjusting/repairing of the temporary shoring is recommended until permanent repairs are completed.
6. During construction of permanent repairs, it is the responsibility of the repair/construction contractor and the repair/construction designer to verify the suitability of and supplement any existing temporary shoring/bracing that will be delegated to and utilized during construction activities. Shoring/bracing during construction needs to consider changes to the shoring/bracing conditions throughout construction and the application of construction loads. Shoring/bracing during construction also needs to consider differing deterioration conditions from that present during installation of the temporary shoring contained in these construction documents, among other things.
D. EXISTING SERVICES AND UTILITIES
1. Contractor shall review all existing conditions to determine all Electrical and Mechanical services and Utilities affected by the repair work. Make necessary temporary connections to maintain existing services to all areas of the parking garage or other areas (Not in Contract) affected by the work. The contractor shall submit the methods and schedule of connections for the owner’s approval prior to commencement.
E. DETAILS AND SYMBOLS
1. Repair details are shown on drawing series R-501 and are generally identified as two-digit (X.X) details.
2. Where the Work Item bubble is noted “TYP,” it means the Work Item occurs at all locations where the applicable deterioration or designation symbol occurs on that plan.
3. Where two or more Work Item Bubbles are grouped together, it means any or all of the referenced work items may be applicable. Coordination of Work Items is Contractor’s responsibility.
4. See Work Item specification (020010) for additional information regarding details.
F. CONSTRUCTION PHASING, SEQUENCING AND TRAFFIC MAINTENANCE
1. Work sequence shall be coordinated with the Owner’s representative and all identified project representatives.
2. Work hours are 7 am - 7 pm, Monday - Friday. The Contractor shall verify work hours with the Owner. Contractor shall coordinate off-hours, weekend, and holiday Work with Owner at least 72 hours in advance.
3. Contractor shall be responsible to lockout access to the structure after all entries or exits by contractor's laborers or material deliveries so that structure is maintained continuously locked to unauthorized public access.
4. Owner will continue to use structure during shoring/barricading installation.
Contractor shall phase/perform work so that no more than 50 spaces are closed beyond those scheduled to be barricaded as shown on the Drawings.
G. WORKSITE REQUIREMENTS
1. Trash and debris shall be removed from the site on a daily basis, including all loose concrete removals required for shoring installation.
2. The Contractor is responsible for protecting all adjacent structures, landscaping, and other surfaces and items which could be affected by the Work.

1. THE SHORING LAYOUT SHOWN ON THIS DETAIL SHEET IS FOR THE TYPICAL 90-KIP CAPACITY SHORE GROUP. WHERE INCREASED OR DECREASED SHORE CAPACITY IS REQUIRED, CONTRACTOR SHALL MODIFY THE NUMBER OF SHORE POSTS ACCORDINGLY, FOLLOWING THE SAME GENERAL SPACING/PLACEMENT REQUIREMENTS AS FOR THE TYPICAL
SHORE GROUP.
2. INSTALL SHORES TIGHT TO FLOOR SLAB AND BOTTOM OF CONCRETE BEAM. WHERE SPALLING PRODUCES AN UNEVEN BEARING SURFACE (WHETHER FROM CONTRACTOR’S REMOVAL OF LOOSE/DELAMINATED CONCRETE OR FROM EXISTING CONCRETE SPALLS), PACK GROUT AT SHORE POST BEARING AREA TO PROVIDE UNIFORM BEARING SURFACE. FOR BIDDING PURPOSES, CONTRACTOR MAY ASSUME THIS WILL BE REQUIRED AT APPROXIMATELY 2-5%
OF SHORE LOCATIONS (VIF).
3. SHORING WILL BE REQUIRED ON MULTIPLE LEVELS. INSTALL SHORING CONCENTRIC FROM LEVEL TO LEVEL.
4. SHORING SHALL BE INSTALLED SNUG TIGHT AND ATTACHED/ANCHORED TO PREVENT MOVEMENT OR LOOSENING.
5. BEAMS AND FLOOR SLABS CONTAIN LIVE POST-TENSIONED TENDONS. CONTRACTOR SHALL EXERCISE EXTREME CAUTION WHEN DRILLING OR REMOVING LOOSE CONCRETE SO AS NOT TO DAMAGE TENDONS. TENDONS MAY
BREAK WITH EXPLOSIVE FORCE WHEN DAMAGED.

6. PROVIDE WORKING LOAD CAPACITY SHOWN ON PLAN SHEETS AT EACH LOCATION
7. DISTRIBUTE LOAD TO GRADE SO THAT THE BEARING PRESSURE IS LIMITED TO 1,500 PSF. SEE DETAIL 5/R-501 FOR
TYPICAL CRIBBAGE REQUIREMENTS.
8. TYPICAL SHORING EXTENSION HEIGHT (ASSUMED FROM TOP OF SLAB TO BOTTOM OF BEAM) IS APPROXIMATELY 8'-8", AS SHOWN ON DETAL 2 / R-501. CONTRACTOR SHALL VERIFY ON A CASE-BY-CASE BASIS.
9. THE ROOF LEVEL (LEVELS 5 & 6) BEAMS ARE ASSUMED TO BE STRUCTURALLY DEFICIENT BASED ON RESULTS OF REPRESENTATIVE TEST OPENINGS. NO LIVE LOAD ALLOWED ON ROOF LEVEL (LEVELS 5 & 6) UNTIL SHORING
INSTALLATION IS COMPLETE.
