About this file
This document is a Procurement Specification for a PIP-II Linac Fast Acting Valve from Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (FNAL), dated 26 Aug 2025. The specification details requirements for procuring one fast acting valve for the Superconducting Linac (SCL) insulating vacuum within the PIP-II accelerator. Key valve specifications include a VAT part number 75036-CE44-0004, pneumatic double-acting actuator, DN 63 CF flanges, UHV to 2 bar pressure range, 316L stainless steel body, radiation resistance >10^4 Gy, valve closing time ≤13 ms, and 24V DC solenoid operation. The valve must be new, bakeable to >150°C, with specific leak rate and seal requirements.
The document also provides cable and connector requirements, specifying conformance to specific cable criteria documents and the ability to operate with cables up to 50 m long. Acceptance testing will involve visual inspection, actuation testing, and leak checking within 14 days of delivery. The procurement is part of the Proton Improvement Plan Phase 2 (PIP-II) project, managed by Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, which is part of the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science. Vendors are required to provide at least three references of similar projects for laboratory or governmental entities within the last ten years.

1. SCOPE
This specification covers the fast acting valve and its cables and connectors for the Superconducting Linac
(SCL) insulating vacuum within the PIP-II accelerator.
2. REQUIREMENTS
The fast acting valve, cables, and connectors shall conform to the requirements as identified below. ANY VARIANCES MUST BE IDENTIFIED IN YOUR RESPONSE. Failure to identify variances could result in disqualification. This specification covers the procurement of one (1) fast acting valve. Cable and connector quantities are specified in the purchase order.
The valve shall be cleaned and packaged according to Ultra High Vacuum (UHV) cleaning and handling procedures. It shall arrive ready for UHV use.
Fast Acting Valve shall have
1. VAT part number 75036-CE44-0004
2. ability to operate to all requirements listed here with VAT HV sensor, cold cathode 770SH-99NN and VAT Series 75 VF-2 controller without modification
3. have pneumatic double-acting actuator with solenoid valve and microswitch double position indicator
4. DN 63 CF flanges
5. bellows feedthrough
6. pressure range UHV to 2 bar (abs)
7. valve body bakeable to >/=150 deg C
8. valve body material 316L stainless steel
9. metal bonnet seal
10. Viton gate seal
11. radiation resistance to >104 Gy
12. be new (not used or refurbished)
13. valve closing time </= 13 ms
14. valve solenoid shall operate at 24 V DC
15. valve fail in current position in case of power failure or air pressure loss
16. valve body leak rate <1E-10 l/s
Fast Acting Valve Cables and Connectors
Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory 5
1. Valve and gauge cable shall conform to ED0014355 Cable Criteria.pdf. Valve and gauge cable and connectors shall conform to ED0014371 PIP-II Standard Cable and Connector List. Alternatively, vendor may submit their cable and connector specifications (type, part number, etc.) and
Fermilab will identify and/or provide suitable replacement cable. The replacement cable may be drop-shipped to the vendor for performance testing at the vendor’s request.
2. Valve and gauges shall be able to operate with cables up to 50 m long. Vendor shall identify maximum cable length for proper valve and gauge function in their response. While spooled cable with connector kits is preferred, pre-terminated cables will be considered (lengths will vary;
Fermilab will provide a list upon request).
3. Valve cable shall be supplied in a single spool. Fermilab will cut to length.
4. Gauge cable shall be supplied in a single spool. Fermilab will cut to length.
3. DELIVERY AND ACCEPTABILITY TESTING
Acceptance Criteria for these components require that they shall be visually inspected upon receipt and actuated prior to installation. In addition, the valve will be leak checked. These QC checks will be completed within 14 days of delivery.
1. PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE
Please provide at least three prior references of similar size and scope projects for laboratory or governmental entities within the last ten years.
