A-2. SITE INFORMATION, SITE HISTORY, & SITE DATA

Site Information:

The Applecross Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) serves the Applecross Country

Club development and the area surrounding the village of Guthriesville, East Brandywine

Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania. Wastewater treatment is accomplished using an activated sludge, sequencing batch reactor system as designed by Aqua Aerobics. All three disposal methods (stream discharge, lagoon, and drip disposal) are located within East Brandywine

Township.

The WQM Permit #1506407 requires quarterly analysis of static water level; sampling depth, turbidity, pH, chloride, total phosphorus, ammonia nitrogen, nitrate nitrogen, nitrite nitrogen, total dissolved solids, fecal coliform, and alkalinity. In addition, there is annual sampling for TSS, Sulfate, and Sodium. These parameters are tested for groundwater monitoring wells MWAC-1, MWAC-2, MWAC-4, MWAC-5, MWAC-6, MWAC-10, MWAC-11, MWAC-12, MWAC-13, MWAC-14, MWAC-15 for the Applecross Golf Course and Applecross Drip Irrigation System.

Sampling data taken from monitoring wells can be seen in Section A-5, “Monitoring Well

Sampling Data.”

Amendment A-1, A-2, & A-3 of the WQM permit require a similar analysis to the original permit, except that:

• A-1 included the addition of groundwater monitoring wells: MWMV-1, MWMV-2R, MWMV-3R, MWMV-4R, and MWMV-5R for the Mapleview Drip Irrigation System.

• A-2 included the addition of groundwater monitoring wells: MWWT-1, MWWT-2, MWWT-3, MWWT-4, MWWT-5, MWWT-6, MWWT-8, MWWT-9, MWWT-10, and

MWWT-11 for the Weaver Tract Drip Irrigation System.

• A-3 included the addition of groundwater monitoring wells: P-1, P-2, P-3, and P-4 for the

McCausland/ Plank Tract Drip System.

As of September 2025, Mapleview and Plank Tract drip disposal fields have been constructed.

Weaver Tract drip disposal field has not started construction at this time. According to the permit, Weaver Tract will start groundwater monitoring at least six (6) months prior to startup of drip disposal.

Soils and Drip Disposal:

Please see following excerpts from the Applecross Design Engineers Reports for Applecross, Mapleview Development, Weaver Tract, and McCausland/ Plank Tract regarding the description of the soil and drip disposal for each facility. Weaver Tract does not currently, as of September

2025 have a constructed drip field.

• Applecross Design Engineers Report (dated February 13, 2006): “Applecross

Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant Drip Disposal Field: “Drip Zones A, C, E, G and H are underlain by deep, well drained soils and have an application (hydraulic loading) rate of 6,018 gpd/acre. Zones D and F are underlain by moderately deep;

well drained soils and have an application (hydraulic loading) rate 4,551 gpd/acre while Zone B is underlain by deep, moderately well drained soil with an application rate of 3,168 gpd/acre. These values have been used to establish the field hydraulic loading capacities (above) and are based on an average daily rate as determined by the annual loading. The application (hydraulic loading) rates are based on the

Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PA DEP) sample loadings using an average daily rate based on annual loading.”

• Mapleview Development Detailed Hydrogeologic Report (dated August 26, 2016): “The disposal areas contain 3.809 acres of deep, well-drained soil and 4.462 acres of deep, moderately well drained soil on a hilltop and north-facing, downward-sloping hillside. The highest ground surface elevations of approximately 598 feet above MSL occur along the crest of the ridge near monitoring well MW-1. The lowest areas are located north of the hilltop, along the down-gradient edges of the disposal field (568 feet above MSL).”

• Weaver Tract Design Engineer’s Report (dated June 17, 2021): “The drip fields will service 46,600 gallons per day of treated wastewater from the Weaver Tract

Development and will have an excess capacity of 22,800 gpd available for use with additional planning. The drip fields are located just west of the Weaver Tract development. The drip fields are divided into Zones A, B, and C, each Zone having sub-zones. It is noted that there have been some changes in nomenclature during the design that are important to distinguish from the original soil testing done on the

Weaver Tract. The original soil testing was for Field A and Field B. The original

Field A had been split into two zones. Zone A was made up of the well-drained soils from Field A and consists of Zones A-01 through A-10. Zone B was made up of moderately well drained soils from Field A and consists of Zones B-01 through B-

04. Field B from the testing stages is now called Zone C and consists of Zones C-01 through C-08. Drip disposal will be performed by land applying the treated effluent on 11.817 acres of drip irrigation zones. The proposed drip irrigation system will consist of the existing wastewater treatment plant, treated effluent force main, drip pumps, drip feed tank, hydraulic filter unit, drip irrigation components and drip fields.”

• McCausland Plank Drip Disposal System Design Engineer’s Report (dated

May 8, 2023): The flow to the drip disposal fields is based on providing service to eighty-nine (89) single family townhomes within the McCausland/Plank

Development. The volume of wastewater to be conveyed, treated, and disposed of is based on the approved sewage facilities planning flow of 15,575 gallons per day average. The total number of equivalent dwelling units (EDUs) associated with this project is eighty-nine (89).

Monitoring Well Construction Details are located in the section below.

A-5 MONITORING WELL SAMPLING DATA

Per 2024 Applecross & Mapleview Comprehensive Groundwater Evaluation: “Data for the following parameters are obtained quarterly from the eleven groundwater monitoring wells (MWs

1, 2, 4-6, and 10-15): field measurements of static water levels, sampling depth, dissolved oxygen

(D.O), pH and temperature, and groundwater sample laboratory analyses for alkalinity, ammonia nitrogen, chloride, nitrate nitrogen, nitrite nitrogen, specific conductance, total dissolved solids

(TDS), total phosphorus, turbidity, and fecal coliform. In addition, there is annual sampling for total suspended solids (TSS), sulfate, and sodium.

The field measurements and analytical results are summarized and presented in tabular form in

Appendix C for August 2011 (background concentrations) and for the June 2019 - March 2024 monitoring period discussed in this report. It should be noted that the drip irrigation fields started operation in October 2019, in combination with lagoon storage, and have been used continuously since February 2020. Graphical presentations of data trends for alkalinity, ammonia nitrogen, chloride, nitrate, nitrite, sulfate, total phosphate, fecal coliform, TDS, TSS, turbidity, sodium, depth to water, temperature, and pH are illustrated in the figures attached in Appendix E for data obtained between 2011 and March 2024. Each graph contains a vertical bar depicting beginning of continuous drip irrigation field use. Copies of the laboratory analysis reports for fourth quarter

2023 and for the first quarter of 2024 are attached in Appendix F. Any additional lab analysis reports are available upon request.

The following can be summarized for each of the target analytes for the June 2019 – March 2024 quarterly sampling period (see table in Appendix C and/or graphs in Appendix E): The ground water temperature generally ranged between approximately 12 and 14 degrees C for all wells. D.O.

(measured between September 2020 and March 2024) generally ranged between approximately

<1-8 mg/l in MW 14 and approximately 8-11 mg/l in MW 15. The pH ranged between approximately 4.5 and 6.5 standard units in all wells.

Alkalinity ranged from approximately <20-30 mg/l in MW 1 to approximately 140-280 mg/l in

MW 14, with generally lower alkalinity reported for MWs 1, 4, 5, 6, 10, 11 and 15 than for MWs

2, and 12-14. Alkalinity was generally within the range of historic data for most wells, with slight increases observed for MWs 2, 12 and 14 during the 2019-2024 sampling period.

Ammonia nitrogen was detected once in MW 1, at 1.74 mg/l (April 2021) and was not detected in any other well. Chloride ranged from approximately <5-7 mg/l in MW 15 to approximately 130-

250 mg/l in MW 12. Chloride concentrations were approximately stable and within the range of historic concentrations for MWs 2, 4, 5, 10, 13, 14 and 15, while chloride concentrations reported for MWs 1 and 6, and to a lesser extent for MWs 11 and 12, increased over time. For comparison, the EPA has established a secondary maximum contaminant level (SMCL) of 250 mg/l for chloride. Nitrate ranged from approximately 2-3 mg/l in MW 2 to approximately 6-10 mg/l in MW

5. All nitrate concentrations exhibited approximately stable trends and were generally within the range of historic data. For comparison, the EPA-established maximum contaminant level (MCL) for nitrate in drinking water is 10 mg/l. Nitrite was detected once in MW 4, at 7.14 mg/l (January

2020), twice in MW 10, at 1.8 mg/l (December 2019) and 0.85 mg/l (January 2020), and once in

MW 15, at 0.1 mg/l (November 2022), and was not detected in any other well.

Fecal coliform were not detected in MW 13; were detected twice in MW 2 (2-5 MPN/100ml), MW

4 (both times at 1 MPN/100ml), MW 5 (1-2 MPN/100 ml) and MW 14 (1-4 MPN/100ml); were detected three times in MW 1 (1-40 MPN/100ml), MW 11 (1-12 MPN/100ml), MW 12 (3-18

MPN/100 ml) and MW 15 (1-32 MPN/100ml); were detected six times in MW 10 (1-12 MPN/100 ml); and were detected seven times in MW 6 (2-68 MPN/100 ml). It is illustrated in the data table

(Appendix C) and/or graphs (Appendix E), that fecal coliform were historically detected at times in all wells and that there is no increasing trend for fecal coliform in any well. For comparison, the permit-specified discharge limitation for fecal coliform is 200/100 ml as the geometric mean of two monthly samples.

Total phosphate ranged from below method detection limit to approximately 0.93 mg/l in all wells.

All total phosphate concentrations exhibited approximately stable or decreasing trends and were generally within the range of or below historic data.

TDS ranged from 66-268 mg/l in MW 13 to approximately 317-876 mg/l in MW 12. TDS concentrations exhibited a slight increase for MWs 1 and 6 and were generally stable and within the range for all other wells. Maximum TDS concentrations for MWs 1 and 6 were 306 and 332 mg/l, respectively, below the 500 mg/l EPA-SMCL for TDS. Turbidity ranged between <1-3 units in MW 4 and <1-112 units for MW 6. Specific conductance (measured between September 2020 and March 2024) generally ranged between approximately 146-167 umhos/cm in MW 15 and approximately 639-1,070 mg/l in MW 12. The following can be summarized for the compounds that were analyzed annually:

With the exception of one sample from MW 14 reported at below detection limit, sulfate ranged between 12-14.3 mg/l in MW 12 and 27-34 mg/l in MW 12. The sulfate concentrations appeared to be stable and within the range of historic data. TSS ranged between <1-6 mg/l in MW 11 and

<4-254 mg/l in MW 12. Sodium ranged from 3.5-3.9 mg/l in MW 15 to approximately 44-66 mg/l in MW 14. Sodium concentrations were approximately stable and within the range of historic concentrations for MWs 4, 5, 6, 10, 13 and 15, while chloride concentrations reported for MWs 1, 2, 11, 12 and 14 increased over time. For comparison, the EPA has established a secondary maximum contaminant level (SMCL) of 250 mg/l for chloride.

In summary, based on groundwater sample laboratory analytical data obtained from the onsite monitoring wells between June 2019 and March 2024 and presented in this report, the operation of the drip irrigation fields does not appear to have adversely impacted groundwater quality at the site to a level where system modifications would be required at this time. However, continued groundwater monitoring is recommended to obtain more data and update future trend analyses

B-2. SITE INFORMATION, SITE HISTORY, & SITE DATA

The Mapleview Drip Irrigation System is serviced by the Applecross Regional Wastewater

Treatment Plant (WWTP). The drip system services the Mapleview Subdivision in East

Brandywine Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania.

Treatment is accomplished at the WWTP using an activated sludge, sequencing batch reactor system as designed by Aqua Aerobics. All three disposal methods (stream discharge, lagoon, and drip disposal) are located within East Brandywine Township.

The WQM Permit No. 1506407 requires quarterly analysis of static water level, sampling depth, turbidity, pH, chloride, total phosphorus, ammonia nitrogen, nitrate nitrogen, nitrite nitrogen, total dissolved solids, fecal coliform, and alkalinity. In addition, there is annual sampling for TSS, Sulfate, and Sodium. These parameters are tested for groundwater monitoring wells MWMV-1, MWMV-R2, MWMV-R3, MWMV-R4, MWMV-R5 for the Mapleview Drip Irrigation System.

Sampling data taken from monitoring wells can be seen in Section B-5, “Monitoring Well

Sampling Data.”
