Please advise if the drawing type you need has not been supplied. These are the available drawing types:
• PDF 2D documents - These documents display the tower geometry with dimensions, notes and annotations.
• DWG 2D AutoCAD layouts – This 2D layout is a full scale electronic representation of the tower to insert into your own AutoCad layout. The .dwg contains no text so should be accompanied by the PDF files.
• JT 3D solid model files - These lightweight 3D solids may be used by solid model programs such as NX (Unigraphics), I-DEAS, Solid Edge, Catia, Pro/Engineer, and Autodesk Inventor 2009, among others. A free JT viewer can be found at www.jt2go.com. JT is not compatible with Revit; however, the JT file can be converted to DWG using Autodesk Inventor and then imported into Revit. This results in a heavy Revit file thus not suitable for all applications.
• Revit – Configuration specific Revit files are not yet available. However, a lightweight Revit part family showing the basic tower may be downloaded from our website. Go to http://spxcooling.com/revit.
Coating over Galvanized rev4.doc 9/10/08 BP page 1 of 2
Coating over Galvanized Steel for Cooling Towers –
An Unwise Choice
Coating damage is inevitable, whether during assembly, transportation, operation, or maintenance. If the coating barrier is breached in any way, through damage, deterioration, defects, or water absorption, the protection is compromised. Also, coating over galvanized reduces the cathodic protection provided by the zinc. While cuts and scratches of bare galvanized steel are protected by the anodic action of the surrounding zinc surface, if the galvanized steel is coated, this action can be impeded since the zinc surface is not available to the electrolyte. In effect, the coating disables much of the protection provided by the zinc and the durability of the material is largely dependent on the quality of the coating alone.
Coating quality is sensitive to surface preparation, ambient conditions at time of application, process variables, and human error as evidenced by the need for complex quality assurance programs. There are many opportunities for problems to occur. For example, optimal surface preparation is difficult to obtain with mild chemical cleaning alone. Harsh chemical or mechanical preparation is better but will remove some zinc, thus reducing the benefit of the galvanizing.
Electrostatically applied powder coatings can easily be non-uniform due to incomplete or imbalanced electrical fields. Unavoidable phenomena such as back-ionization and the Faraday cage effect result in coating defects such as orange peeling, “star” blemishes, and incomplete coating.[1,3] Powder coating over galvanized steel presents unique problems such as poor adhesion, outgassing of air pockets (causing pinholes in coating), and bubbling during cure stage, which result in poor coating quality. In fact, one powder coating consultant calls galvanized steel an “unstable substrate” which is “high-risk” and “comes with a higher defect rate”.[2]
Porosity is a common problem with coatings and can actually be a local accelerator of corrosion. Also, coatings can blister, and peel away or chip off to create plugging problems in cooling systems. Furthermore, by the nature of coatings, maintenance is inevitable. Maintenance accessibility of many of the surfaces in a factory assembled cooling tower is severely limited or non-existent.
Coating of galvanized steel will not allow increased cycles of concentration nor increased limits for water constituents such as chlorides or sulfates. Promoters of coated galvanized steel will not explicitly guarantee extended product life.
Coating over Galvanized rev4.doc 9/10/08 BP page 2 of 2
Because the life of a coated surface is highly variable due to process, handling, and environmental factors, cooling tower purchasers should not regard coated galvanized steel as a viable material option. While properly and carefully applied coatings can add life to galvanized steel under limited circumstances, uncoated galvanized steel is the more prudent choice for HVAC cooling towers. Coated galvanized steel for cooling towers should not be considered a premium material. Truly premium materials such as stainless steel or plastics are available if water or environmental conditions warrant.
Given the possibility of zinc removal, pinholes, damage, or general poor quality of a coating applied over galvanized steel, the service life of the equipment can actually be less than that of uncoated galvanized steel (Figure 2).

Cooling Tower Component Storage – Prior to Assembly storage guidelines
These storage guidelines are for field-erected cooling towers and other “knockdown” (KD) cooling towers to be stored at the jobsite beyond three weeks before being assembled. Secure materials in a safe area and label “for cooling tower installation.”
See the handling instructions for specific components below.
PVC Film Fill and Packs
Handle PVC fill components carefully and protect from heat and UV damage (embrittlement) on the jobsite. Avoid tearing or mashing while unloading. When storing sheets and pack assemblies beyond three weeks, store indoors away from direct sunlight. If no shading structure exists, cover PVC materials with shade cloth, tarp, plastic sheeting or plastic-coated paper. To prevent heat accumulation and sheet distortion:
• Cover the sheet stack with either an insulating material such as plywood or a breathable insulating material such as shade cloth. If neither is available, a gap of approximately 6" (15cm) between the cover and the top of the stack is required.
• Allow hot air inside the stack to escape by venting or using breathable cloth.
• Arrange so air flows freely under the bottom of the stack.
Geareducer® Gear Drives and Motors
Store gear drives and motors in an enclosed building to avoid infiltration of contaminants into gears and motor windings. Rotate motor shaft monthly so that bearing surfaces are adequately lubricated. Air conditioning is not required.
PVC/RTR Piping
Store piping in an enclosed building to avoid infiltration of contaminants into bell and spigot groove areas which could contribute to joint leaks at installation. Keep paper plugs taped over pipe ends intact. Store distribution system branch arms and nozzles away from direct sunlight.
Fiberglass Framing and Casing Panels
Elevate framing members off the ground. Store casing panels upright or angled to prevent rainwater and condensation ponding and permanent staining. Avoid direct sunlight.
Lumber Framing
Place lumber and plywood stacks on dry, flat ground. Allow space between the ground and lumber for air circulation. Line up spacers vertically within the stacks so that weight above does not distort lumber below. Wrap the top, ends and sides of lumber and plywood with breathable lumber wrap material to minimize exposure to moisture and direct sunlight. If wrap is not available, place scrap plywood or other covering over the top and ends of each wood stack to help control damage.
Miscellaneous
Store all fluids, oil, caulking, thread guard and aerosols indoors to prevent freezing, water and heat damage.
Cooling Tower Long Term Downtime Preparations
Protecting a cooling tower prior to startup or during downtime of at least a month requires several critical maintenance steps.
If the cooling tower is not installed or connected to power:
1. At least once a month, turn fan and motor shafts by hand for ten revolutions or more to lubricate bearings and gears.
2. Every three months, lubricate motor and fan shaft bearings (if applicable).
3. Check the electrical equipment manufacturers’ user manuals for storage instructions. To prevent condensation, dust, insects and other foreign material from entering electrical equipment, store these items inside whenever possible. If outside storage is necessary, position or mount electrical cabinetry so that it is ventilated and drains as designed.
4. If supplied with motor space heaters, consider energizing them to prevent condensation.
5. Open all tower drains. Position or mount galvanized steel components so they drain and dry completely to prevent stains.
If the cooling tower will remain idle 6 months or longer, consider these additional steps:
6. If equipped with a gearbox, fill it with oil in lieu of turning the fan shaft by hand. Return oil level to normal operating level when resuming service. Reference User Manual: Cooling Tower Downtime Instructions Z0238848 at spxcooling.com.
7. Perform insulation tests on motor windings before resuming service.
If the cooling tower is installed and connected to power:
Operate the motor for at least three hours per month to dry out windings and lubricate bearing surfaces. Reference User Manual:
Marley Fan Motor Z0239042 at spxcooling.com.
2. Operate the motor with belt, coupling or driveshaft connected to turn fan shaft and lubricate bearings and gears.
3. Check electrical equipment manufacturers’ user manuals for storage instructions.
4. If supplied with motor space heaters, consider energizing to prevent condensation.
5. Open all tower drains so water drains and tower dries completely to prevent stains.

Maintain inlet water pressure at or below 50 psig (3.45 bar)to ensure valve seal life
Maintenance Know How
Designed specifically for cooling tower duty, Marley makeup water float valves provide long life with little maintenance.
Typically, valves are available in complete kits which include valve, float arm and float to fit a specific application.
When installed some trial and error adjustment of the float valve may be required to balance the makeup water with tower operation. Ideally, the float level valve setting will be when no water is wasted through the overflow at pump shutdown. However, the water level after pump start-up must be deep enough to assure positive pump suction.
