The contractor will have to close this area with a plastic net when he completes the application until the day he comes back to continue working on the project.

5.1.2 Earthworks-Preparing the Grounds for the Sod

1. Removal of soil to a depth of 10 cm to make a levelled surface according to the directions of the Embassy’s Gardening Supervisor. In this step the contractor will remove all the roots of the old lawn. Before the addition of the new soil the Gardening Supervisor will check and give the ok to proceed to the next step. (The contractor will have to arrange for the removal of the soil from the site).

2. Use of a rotary cultivator to plow the soil in depth, for the whole area (minimum depth of

10 cm).

3. Adjust (add or remove) sprinklers in the irrigation system in order to efficiently cover the new area that is going to be covered with the sod. Check the existing irrigation system for any damage due to the work already taking place. If it is the contractor’s responsibility to replace them under the COR or head gardeners’ directions.

4. Removal of roots from the trees and shrubs according to the Embassy’s Gardening supervisor directions. Remove all the existing pebbles and gravel from the area which the sod will be applied. Make the surface of the area even by compressing it lightly with a cylinder.

5. Addition of good quality soil. The mixture shall consist of sand silt and clay and the desired ratio between the components will be 75% sand 15% silt 10% clay. The end product shall contain 3 to 5% compost. The contractors must provide a soil analysis from a laboratory.

5.1.3 Installation of the New Sod

1. The contractor will have to arrange the way that the new sod will come on the construction site. The variety of grass which will be used will be Festuca arundinacea or equal. The sod will be inspected by gardening supervisor or head gardener for pests. COR of the project can reject the sod in case it is full of pests or damaged.

2. When the contractor starts relaying the sod he will start from the farthest point of that area.

If they can’t apply the first row of the sod on a straight line, then they will pull a string from side to side in order to do so. When the workers lay the sod, they must be careful so they will not lay one side of the sod on top of the other nor will they lay them with gaps in between.

3. Every 1m of sod that will be laid on the ground the workers have to irrigate it lightly, especially if the temperature is rising during the day above 200C.

4. When the contractor finishes with the laying of the sod, they have to compress the sod with a cylinder that he will provide so there will be no air pockets between the ground soil and the sod.

5. The workers during work must be careful with the existing irrigation system. The sprinklers must be 1cm underneath the finished surface of the lawn. Before the contractor finishes the job, the irrigation system will be checked for damages by the gardeners and the gardening supervisor of the Embassy.

6. Once the sod is laid the contractor shall spread Biopron biological fertilizer. The quantity shall be no less than 10gr/m2.

7. The contractor will be responsible for the maintenance of the lawn until the sod grows roots and is established. The contractor will also be responsible to do the first and second mow of the lawn. Overall, the contractor is responsible for a period of no less than a month.
