D. Execution

1. General:

a. Bituminous materials shall be applied only when surface and weather conditions are favorable.

b. Bituminous materials shall be placed only during daylight hours when the base and air temperatures are 50 F. or higher, when the relative humidity is 75% or less, and when the base surface is dry.

Moisture content of the upper 2 inches of base

02533-4 material shall be not more than 65% optimum moisture content.

c. All bituminous pavement work shall be accomplished between June 1 through October 15.

All paving shall be conducted in the presence of the Government Inspector.

2. The bituminous surfacing shall be constructed in two (2) separate compacted lifts to the depth described in the specifications and shown on the drawings.

3. Surface Preparation:

a. Areas which are to receive paving shall be true to line and grade and shall be free of loose or foreign materials, which in the opinion of the Engineer, would impede proper bonding.

b. All vertical surfaces and existing asphalt with which the mixture will come in contact shall be given a tack coat. Apply tack coat as specified in WI/DOT Section 455.3.2.

c. Any existing bituminous or concrete surface abutting the new bituminous shall have a straight, cut joint made.

c. Following compaction of longitudinal joints and edges, rolling shall start longitudinally at the sides and gradually progress toward the center of the parking lot. The rollers shall move at a uniform speed with the drive wheels nearest the paver.

d. If rolling causes displacement of the material, the affected areas shall be loosened at once with lutes or shovels and restored to the original grade of the loose material before being re-rolled.

e. Heavy equipment and/or rollers will not be permitted to stand on the pavement until it has been thoroughly compacted and cooled.

f. Breakdown rolling shall immediately follow rolling of the longitudinal joints and edges. Rollers shall be operated as close to the paver as necessary to obtain the required density without undue placement.

g. The second rolling shall be accomplished with pneumatic tire or tandem rollers as specified herein. The second rolling shall follow the breakdown rolling as closely as possible and while the mix is still at a temperature which will allow for proper compaction.

h. Finish rolling shall be accomplished while the material is still warm enough to allow for removal of the roller marks.

i. Areas which are not accessible by the rollers shall be compacted with a trench roller or by hand.

02533-7

7. Surface Requirements:

a. The surface shall be tested with a 10 foot straight edge. Any irregularities which vary more than 1/4 inch shall be corrected by the Contractor at no additional cost to the Government.

b. Drainage slopes shall conform to those shown on the construction drawings, with a minimum of 2% being required.

8. Traffic Control:

When working, the Contractor shall provide appropriate barricades, warning devices, and/or flagmen as necessary to protect workers, equipment, and construction areas.

Follow the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices

(MUTCD).
