AO-02-02-803 Angkor Dance Costume

High Priority; Park to confirm dimensions.

52" tall on dress form, the base width of dress form is 14" while the skirt at the hip is the deepest measurement at 15." Dress should be displayed on form.

The Cambodian classical dance costumes are highly ornate and heavily embroidered, sometimes including sequins and even semi-precious gems. Most of the costumes are thought to be representative of what divinities wear, as reflected in the art style of the post-Angkor period. Various pieces of the costume (such as shirts) have to be sewn onto the dancers for a tight fit.

Female costume

The typical female, or neang, costume consists of (1) Sampot (charabap), a type of woven fabric with two contrasting silk threads along with a metallic thread (gold or silver in color). The sampot is wrapped around the lower body in a sarong-like fashion, then pleated into a band in the front and secured with a gold or brass belt. In the current style, part of the pleated brocade band hangs over the belt on the left side of the belt buckle, which is a clear distinction from Thai classical dance costumes where this pleated band is tucked into the belt to the right of the belt buckle. Worn over the left shoulder is a shawl-like garment called (2) asbai (also known as the robang khnang, literally "back cover"). It is the most decorative part of the female costume, embroidered extensively with tiny beads and sequins. The usual embroidery pattern for the sbai these days is a diamond-shaped floral pattern, but, in the past, there were more variations of floral patterns. Under the sbai is a silk undershirt or bodice worn with a short sleeve exposed on the left arm. Around the neck is an embroidered

High Priority

1.25"W (center shell) x 9 "L plus 2 ties, each 11.5" L. Tip to tip length is 34".

I am proposing to design and make a wampum choker of individually-made purple and white quahog shell disc beads, as an example of a distinct local and traditional form of personal adornment from my Northeastern coastal Wampanoag tribal heritage. The approximately 125 beads will cut, shaped and hand-drilled before weaving onto naturally-tanned smoked deerskin warps; the warps will be toned/dyed with an earthy red clay from Aquinnah, into a substantial and striking 5-row women’s choker. A geometric motif will form the body of the choker; there will also be a central hand-sculpted wampum purple shell piece in perhaps the figure of a whale or bird. This heirloom-quality item may be displayed flat, at an angle, or standing up wrapped around a round form.

If this (or another instrument) is one of the few things that an immigrant brought from home to Lowell, this object can serve as a powerful symbol of what someone felt was important. Once again, need to confirm the story behind it.

A pear-shaped instrument with a compound back of dark wooden strips separated by narrow white inlays and four pairs of steel strings. The tailpiece stamped "BELL/ BRAND /PATENTED/ N.M.S. CO." The finger board has 17 frets and there is a dark, shell plate with white floral inlay between the bridge and the oval sound hole. Decorative alternating dark/light purfling bands face the margin and also surround the sound hole. The face is separating from the body and the glue joints need repair.

AO-02-05-801 Southeast Asian Food Carrier

High Priority

Tiffin food carriers are used by many cultures as a method for carrying small meals that are eaten midday for lunch or as an in between meal snack. Tiffin is an English term associated with Indian "Dabba" or box, usually a cylindrical tin or aluminum container. Intricately decorated, tiered containers called Chan Srak in Khmer (ចានស្រាក់) have been used by Cambodians for hundreds of years. During Pchum Ben a 15-day ceremony to honor a family's ancestors, it is customary to carry these containers of food to temples, as offering to the monks.

Lowell’s Portuguese immigrants were required to provide “proof-of-age” documents to the Lowell School Department. These documents determined whether young Portuguese children would go to school or work. Hundreds of these baptismal certificates, passports, and visas survived. They offer detailed information such as: names, places of birth, relations, and dates of entry. They also included: names of transport ships, ports of arrival, and sometimes small photographs.

Most of these documents were translated by the clergy and staff at St.

Anthony’s Parish.
