DANCE

Dance, drama, and music have always been prominent in Khmer society, but these cherished traditions were nearly wiped out when the Khmer Rouge controlled Cambodia in the 1970s. Artists were among those deliberately targeted. More than 90% perished or fled. Today, as Cambodians around the world work to rebuild, the people see the resurrection of their music and dance as testimony of the endurance of their culture.”

ART

This beautifully crafted statue will serve as a reminder that, not only does the city still care about our people, but that it cares about history, the voice of our people, and the continuing education of the public of the people that inhabited this land for centuries before it was the City of Lowell.”

THOMAS EAGLE RISING LIBBY, 2018

X

Chief, Greater Lowell Indian Cultural Association

Where do you see yourself reflected in the physical landscape? Public art and memorials can visually connect a group to a place. For the Greater Lowell Indian Cultural Association, the installation of this statue near the Pawtucket Falls would serve as a vital reminder of the area’s Indigenous history. This quote is from GLICA’s request to the Lowell City Council to install this important piece of public art.

THOMAS EAGLE RISING LIBBY, 2018

Preparing and serving traditional foods can be an occupation, but sometimes chefs modify their recipes to satisfy customer tastes. In 1920, about one-third of Chinese Americans living in Lowell worked in restaurants, and many of those altered their recipes to please a mainly Euro-American population.

We witnessed gardens transform vacant lots into community hubs where residents with seemingly little in common forged bonds and built stronger neighborhoods.

We served customers who finally could get fresh greens in their neighborhood, without having to hire a cab to get to a grocery store.”

LYDIA SISSON y FRANCEY SLATER, 2017 Cofundadoras, Mill City Grows
