01.01 TACTILE FLOOR PLAN MAP
ADA guidelines call for a low relief tactile map for visitors who are blind; this graphic hangs vertically on the wall, amidst a stylized map of Lowell.
01.02 TRANSLATED EXHIBIT GUIDES
Visitors will find a wall of brochures, each translating the exhibit into a different language. This sets an important tone of welcoming, accessibility, and awareness of Lowell’s cultural and linguistic diversity.
01.03-100 LOWELL EXPERIENCES WALL
Graphics immerse visitors in the many faces, and sounds, of Lowell. Color treatments to the images helps us highlight diversity, but also focus attention away from individual skin tones and more towards our connections to one another. A large statement sets the tone of the exhibit in no uncertain terms—diversity has and always will make Lowell and America more vibrant.
01.03-200 LOWELL EXPERIENCES WALL/FLIPDOORS
Interpretive text introduces nine flip doors, each with a specific Lowellian person or group on the front. This display introduces the recurring “Lowell Experience” exhibit element (with content presented elsewhere via touchscreen). Here, visitors discover what may be surprising tidbits about each person or group through a brief quip—an enticement to follow these stories further in the exhibit.
01.04 EXHIBIT INTRODUCTION
This graphic panel introduces the entire exhibit. Its design creates a standard that will repeat throughout the space, introducing each individual scene.
01.05 AUDIOSCAPE
A ceiling speaker plays a looping ambient soundtrack of voices, city sounds, and music clips sets an urban, diverse, and vibrant tone that enhances the visuals surrounding the visitor.

02.01 SCENE INTRO/BENCH
The Scene Intro panel helps order the visitor experience. Here, visitors should begin to consider how and why we express our culture, and how and why these expressions make Lowell and America more vibrant. A bench on the back side of the panel provides a rest stop for visitors. The structure lightly resembles a bus stop.
02.02 DANCE
Exhibits explore diverse forms of dance, and encourage visitors to express and connect themselves physically. A video monitor presents elegant movements from a range of diverse cultural backgrounds.
02.03 ART/CRAFT/COSTUME
We share stories and objects of diverse cultural handiworks, including but not limited to artwork, crafts, and costume, from Lowellian artisans. Visitors watch a film on craft and take inspiration from various tactile examples on the rail.
02.04 MUSIC
An orchestra of diverse musical traditions, represented by different instruments and other music artifacts in the adjacent case, are presented on a touchscreen. Visitors can focus on individual instruments, increasing and decreasing sounds to isolate various sounds in a track.
02.05 FOOD
Visitors engage with stories of how people express their culture through foods.
Visitors interact with two “menu” flipbooks that sit on a bistro table; each featuring one ingredient in a variety of cultural dishes, as well as a “surprise” smell at the end of each menu. Visitors can also leave their own recipes by posting sticky notes on a “Today’s Specials” board.
02.06 STORIES/LITERATURE
Artifacts and content regarding story telling and literature are presented in a case and on the rail system.
02.07 LOWELL EXPERIENCE STATION
The first of three of its kind in the exhibit, this touchscreen interface echoes the Lowell Experience introduction (01.03-200) in its tableau of nine faces. Visitors select one of the faces on the touchscreen to hear their answer to a meaningful question posted above. Visitors can also select an option at the bottom to hear others stories—video recordings from the Scene 06 storybooth. This also encourages visitors to share their own stories with the park.
